Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have officially released their statistics for 2023, which according to the data, show a significantly small percentage of illegal immigrants being deported compared to the large number of encounters with Border Patrol agents.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data indicates that Border Patrol agents had more than two million encounters during Fiscal Year 2023, while field operatives came into contact with another million, for a grand total of over 3.2 million encounters with illegal immigrants in the United States and on its borders.
ICE's 2023 statistics reveal that only 142,580 non-citizens were deported, which is a 4.4 percent deportation rate in relation to the large number of border encounters. The data shows that of those deportees, 49 percent had criminal histories, with an average of 3.8 convictions per criminal.
The majority of the crimes committed were considered violent crimes with 1,457 charges of homicide; 1,450 kidnappings; 3,809 sexual assaults; 26,714 assaults; 2,760 robberies; 5,410 burglaries; and 6,144 weapon offenses.
A few days into the new year, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was interviewed by Fox News "Special Report" host Bret Baier, and when asked how many illegal immigrants had been encountered crossing the U.S.-Mexico border between ports of entry and then released into the country under the Biden administration, he would not give an exact number.
According to the New York Post, he said "well more than a million per year," but did not offer an exact number. Baier asked, "Customs and Border Protection sources say that currently, they are releasing more than 70 percent of the migrants crossing every day and sometimes more than that number. Would that surprise you?"
Mayorkas responded by saying, "It would not. It would not surprise me at all." He added, "I know the data and I will tell you that when individuals are released they are released into immigration enforcement proceedings." He then stated that a "record number" of migrants were "returned or removed" in 2023.
Fiscal Year 2023 was a record for the Biden administration, as those deportations were by far the most since he has taken officer. In 2022, there were 72,177 deportations and in 2021, there were 59,011. However, even with a total of 273,768 deportations in the first three years of his presidency, Biden's numbers are less than two and a half times that of President Donald Trump's final three years, respectively. Trump deported 709,227 illegal immigrants from 2018 to 2020.
Lora Ries, director of the Border Security and Immigration Center at the Heritage Foundation, told Breitbart that she refuted Mayorkas' claim, saying, "Alejandro Mayorkas can't play it both ways." Ries said, "He's already publicly admitted that they've released at least 70 percent of the 10 plus million illegal aliens encountered by Customs and Border Protection in the past three years."
Ries said, "He can't then go portray himself as a secretary of immigration enforcement based on deportations, especially when you examine the numbers to scale. The American people stopped believing his lies long ago."
According to Breitbart, few illegal immigrants are being deported from the United States interior. Those types of deportations are known as "interior removals" because they involve illegal immigrants who are living across American communities and exclude those who have recently arrived at U.S. Borders.
RJ Hauman, president of the National Immigration Center for Enforcement (NICE) said in a statement, "President Trump stood for American sovereignty and proudly enforced our laws. A country that doesn't properly deport illegal aliens is no country at all. Joe Biden is derelict in his duties as president."
