WASHINGTON, DC - While Democrats and Soros-funded “protesters” complain about “Dictator Trump” mobilizing an army to bring DC residents into submission, those who actually live in the city and own businesses there are praising the president’s decisive action, The New York Post reports.
On Wednesday, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser admitted that Trump’s action is responsible for crime plummeting in our nation’s capital in just a matter of less than three weeks, while the aforementioned residents and business owners say they already feel safer.
“We greatly appreciate the surge of offices that enhance what MPD has been able to do in this city,” Bowser said in a Wednesday press conference.
“The difference between this 20-day period of this federal surge and last year represents [an] 87% reduction in carjackings,” Bowser noted, while later posting the complete statistics on her X account.
That contrasts sharply with claims made by Democrats, who say the surge has done nothing to reduce what they call already falling crime rates, while saying residents in DC feel “under siege” and accuse the president of “stoking fear for political gain.”
Meanwhile, violent crime has decreased by 45% compared to the same period last year, while overall crime has dropped 15%.
“We know that when carjackings go down, when the use of guns goes down, when homicides or robberies go down, neighborhoods feel safer and are safer,” Bowser continued.
Bowser got agreement from a local businessperson. Indu Bhatia runs a liquor store only a half mile from the White House and told The Post, “All my employees, including me, feel much more safe, and even our customers feel really happy when they walk into our store.”
She said her store was robbed so frequently that they had to renovate the store to increase security.
“All [you] can do as a small business owner is protect yourself,” she said.
She noted that while the National Guard and federal agents have been a Godsend, she credits the president with federalizing the DC Metro Police as making things much better.
“I think the local cops have been doing the job, surely, better,” Bhatia added.
Washington, DC, has long enjoyed a reputation as a crime-ridden hellhole where the murder rate surpasses even Chicago and is seven times higher than New York City.
While violence has been trending downward somewhat this year, specific categories of crime that affect everyday residents have skyrocketed since the pre-COVID era.
Between 2019 and 2024, carjackings exploded by 241%, while vehicle thefts were up by 143%.
The murder rate, which Democrats have claimed is cratering, is still 12% higher than it was in 2019. It used to be that even one murder was one too many.
Meanwhile, those who support the president’s move remain hopeful it will clean up the city.
For example, a 22-year-old Johns Hopkins University student named Mike was in the Federal Triangle neighborhood and said the federal takeover of the DC police “shows a renewed interest by the Trump administration to move around resources and maybe tackle the problem in a different way.”
He praised the National Guard members stationed throughout DC, noting they are “pretty nice guys.”
An example of that was one Guardsman stationed near the Navy Memorial, who received a fist bump from a local who said many residents and business owners have been very supportive.
“We’ve had a lot of people saying, ‘I’m glad you’re here doing what you’re doing’–a lot of fist bumps and selfies,” he said.
That is a far cry from the very vocal minority who have been conducting what can be described as “Astroturf” protests, which the far-left media obsesses over covering.
Mahesh, 26, is a government employee who commutes to the city from Maryland. He said he has noticed faster response times from the police.
‘Recently, I went to the White House and saw someone had left a bag outside, and right away a cop went out there and was asking people whose bag it was. [The police] are very alert and I feel like it’s very secure,” he said.
“I think Trump is doing right, taking care of the city,” he added.
Yet another observer, a DC court employee, noted that the quality of life charges inside the courtroom appear to be on the rise.
“I’ve always kept my head on a swivel. For some people, it may be a change, but as far as my job, the only observation is we’re getting more and more crimes coming into the courthouse,” He said.
“There’s a strong possibility the crackdown has led to more of those crimes ending up in court.”
DC had enjoyed a 12-day run of no murders, a run that ended on Tuesday; however, the police union reports crime stats are down across the board since federal intervention.
In an X post, the union said in the past 14 days, total crime is down 11% citywide, which included sharp reductions in robberies (-42%), assaults with a deadly weapon (-13%), carjacking (-85%), car theft (-24%), violent crime (-25%), and property crime (-10%).
One DC metro worker isn’t exactly a fan of the troop deployment, but admitted it appears to be serving as a deterrent.
“It does get rid of a lot of the foolishness inside malls, Metro stations, places of business, just seeing them,” said Alex, 49.
‘You have a dude that might come in here and act the fool, but instead of doing that he sees [National Guard troops] and says, ‘I’m not gonna do nothing’–it does make some people think twice.”
One man who spoke to The Post, Christian Myers, a Washington, DC native who works for a nonprofit (of course) called deploying the Guard “idiotic.”
“I just think it’s going to be another Kent State. It’s going to happen eventually, if they don’t get out of here. They’re going to pull a gun on somebody and shoot somebody that’s underage, a kid.”
Kent State refers to a shooting at Kent State University in Ohio during an anti-war protest 55 years ago that killed four students and injured nine others.
To reiterate, fifty-five years ago. Leftists never forget, we suppose.
Another lefty, Courtney, called the deployment a “publicity stunt” for the Trump administration.
“I don’t think it’s a response to the crime in the city. I live in Southeast Washington, and if you were really worried about crime, you’d focus on the neighborhoods that have crime. I feel like the security presence is largely in areas where people can do photo ops,” she said.
“Living in Navy Yard, we’ve had a lot of roving teenagers on scooters. Having Capitol Police or DC Police in [sic] bikes, I think, makes a lot more sense in our neighborhood to deal with crime than having National Guard or DEA agents who aren’t trained for that.”
Statistics contradict what Courtney told The Post.
