Detroit Chief Wants to Ax Cops Who Helped ICE

DETROIT, MI- We have yet another dimwit big city chief of police who has decided to abdicate his oath of office and defy federal law, this time Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison.

CBS News reports that Bettison plans to terminate two city police officers after they had the audacity to contact U.S. Customs and Border Protection during two separate traffic stops between Dec. 16, 2025, and Feb. 9, 2026, claiming the actions violated department policy.

At a Board of Police Commissioners’ meeting on Feb. 12, Bettison told commissioners that under policy, officers are prohibited from contacting federal law enforcement officials for translation services. Bettison said that due to the officers’ action, the individuals were detained by federal agents.

“Contacting Border Patrol, ICE, or other federal agencies for translation services is strictly prohibited, as it subjects individuals to extreme scrutiny,” Bettison said, claiming that the department is working with a company that offers certified translation services.

Bettison claims the December incident was discovered during a “routine” audit of body-worn cameras.

The first incident last December involved an officer investigating an individual wanted on a felony warrant on the west side of the city. The officer believed the individual wasn’t a legal citizen of the United States and contacted CBP, which took custody of the suspect.

In the second case, a sergeant responded to a request for a supervisor at a traffic stop. During the course of the stop, it was determined that the driver didn’t speak English, and CBP was contacted, Bettison said. He said federal agents “conducted their investigation” and determined the person wasn’t a U.S. citizen. The suspect was then detained.

Sounds like the two officers did an outstanding job removing two illegal aliens from the streets. That, however, didn’t sit well with Bettison.

Both officers were suspended with pay, however on Feb. 12, Bettison asked the police commission to suspend them without pay.

“I will say this to everyone, the 98- 99% of our officers do it the right way each and every day. They’re out there working hard. But I do have 1- 2% that decide to violate our rules, our polices, and our procedures. And to those officers, I will hold them accountable,” Bettison said.

The Board of Police Commissioners said it would discuss the matter during a closed-door session on Thursday.

“We’ll be making a decision on whether these officers violated a policy,” said Detroit Police Commissioner Darryl Woods. Any decision to fire the officers will be made by Bettison after the board makes its decision.

Meanwhile, Detroit City Councilman Gabriela Santiago-Romero released a statement addressing the two incidents:

‘This moment requires us to listen and to be intentional, in order to not cause greater harm. We, as a beloved community, above all else, need to practice mutual aid. I call upon residents across this great city to join together and build communities of care, whereby folks of all backgrounds support one another, care for one another, and love one another.”

That was a word salad worthy of Kamala Harris or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The Detroit News reports that, according to a spokesman for the police department, nothing has changed in the officers’ status since last week’s meeting.

On Jan. 8, Santiago-Romero sent a memo to the city’s law department seeking information on how officials could “ban or limit” ICE activity in Detroit. Another Democrat who has no clue about the Supremacy Clause.
