SAVANNAH, GA – A criminal illegal alien from Guatemala is facing vehicular homicide charges after authorities say the suspect collided into a vehicle, resulting in the other driver suffering fatal injuries, after fleeing an attempted traffic stop conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers earlier in February.
On February 16th, ICE officers were conducting an operation in Savannah when they spotted Oscar Vasquez Lopez entering a vehicle, with said officers attempting to initiate a traffic stop. According to the agency, Lopez initially complied with the stop before unexpectedly fleeing from officers in his vehicle.
Per the agency’s statement, Lopez, who reportedly had a final order of removal issued by a federal judge back in 2024, made a “reckless U-turn” before running a red light, crashing into a vehicle thereafter. The driver of the vehicle allegedly struck by the suspect, identified as Linda Davis, reportedly succumbed to her injuries obtained from the collision.
The victim was reportedly a special education teacher at Herman W. Hesse K-8 School. A statement was released by the school regarding Davis’ passing, regarding the late teacher as “a beloved member of our school family,” and that her passing “has affected us deeply.”
Within ICE’s press release regarding the incident, the agency called out numerous politicians who’ve publicly encouraged illegal aliens to avoid/defy immigration authorities, including figures such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
“This dangerous attempt to evade arrest comes after sanctuary politicians held webinars and provided resources and tips for how to openly defy ICE,” the press release reads in part, further adding, “We are once again calling on sanctuary politicians, agitators, and the media to turn the temperature down and stop calling for violence and resistance against ICE law enforcement.”
Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin also issued a statement in tandem with ICE, saying of the incident, “This vehicular homicide is an absolute tragedy and deadly consequence of politicians and the media constantly demonizing ICE officers and encouraging those here illegally to resist arrest - a felony.”
Secretary McLaughlin further added the anti-ICE rhetoric coming from elected officials and public figures are promoting “dangerous tactics” that are “putting people’s lives at risk.”
“Fleeing from and resisting federal law enforcement is not only a crime but extraordinarily dangerous and puts oneself, our officers and innocent civilians at risk,” Secretary McLaughlin stated, concluding with, “Now, an innocent bystander has lost their life.”
