DETROIT, MI - An “after-hours” strip club located in a west side Detroit home became a killing field early Sunday morning when three people were shot and killed and four others were wounded, the Detroit Free Press reported.
“A fight occurred, an altercation occurred, and as a result, individuals decided to settle it with gun violence,” Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison told reporters at a Sunday morning news conference.
At approximately 7:22 a.m., Detroit police received a 911 call reporting a shooting. Bettison said that the three victims killed were men in their 30s. Four additional people, two men and two women in their 20s and 30s, went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the shooting took place on Prest Street near Eaton Avenue, at a residence familiar to the Detroit Police Department. Bettison told reporters the department has responded to seven calls at the address this year. The address has also been under investigation by the department.
“I’m being told that it was an after-hours location,” the chief continued. “Imagine a strip club...and I’ll leave it at that.”
Continuing, Bettison said, “I can tell you regardless of what was occurring in this particular location; no one deserves to have their life ended or be wounded by gunfire. I do have leads...we will identify the individuals that are responsible for this heinous incident this morning and we will do that in short order.”
Bettison assured the public that there was no ongoing widespread threat to the community.
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield called the shooting “heartbreaking” and said the city will crack down on such illegal, after-hours clubs or businesses.
