Homeland Security Slams NBC Affiliate for Framing Convicted Child Predator As Victim

WASHINGTON, DC – An NBC affiliate attracted the ire and criticism of Homeland Security after the news outlet published a sympathetic article framing an illegal alien convicted pedophile as an “undocumented father” apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) earlier in October.

Emma Goss, a contributor for both The Jewish News of Northern California and NBC Bay Area, penned what many critics – including Homeland Security – are describing as a sympathetic piece for an illegal alien apprehended earlier in October who is a convicted child sex offender.

ICE agents descended upon 42-year-old Gerardo Rojas-Leyva while he was sitting inside of his parked truck outside of his home earlier in October, which reportedly led to neighbors and family members of the illegal alien causing a bit of a scene while filming Rojas-Leyva’s arrest.

NBC Bay Area contributor Goss opened her article on the matter with the line, “Federal agents arrested an undocumented father at his home in San Jose while he was on his way to work,” with the piece seemingly applauding how the illegal alien’s wife tried “to stop the arrest.”

Throughout the entire article from Goss, there’s no mention about why ICE would specifically be targeting someone like Rojas-Leyva, just a repetitive mentioning of him being an “undocumented father” and a closing “warning” in the article telling immigrant communities “to stay vigilant.”

In the world of media and the art of the spin, there’s a variety of ways media outlets engage in gaslighting and outright propaganda – from burying the lede, minimization, exaggeration, the list goes on. But in the case of Goss’ NBC Bay Area article, a critical omission is what would appropriately see the piece filed under the likes of activist journalism and possibly agitprop.

The glaring omission of Rojas-Leyva’s extensive criminal history in the NBC Bay Area article managed to catch the attention of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, with the Homeland Security official taking to social media platform X to point out what NBC managed to miss in their reporting.

“Of course [NBC] refuses to tell the American public that this illegal alien from Mexico has a rap sheet that includes: lewd and lascivious acts with a child, battery of a spouse, domestic battery, compensation for prostitution, felony reentry after removal,” McLaughlin wrote in her post which quoted NBC Bay Area’s original post promoting the story of Rojas-Leyva’s arrest.

The official X account for Homeland Security also joined in on calling out the NBC affiliate, alleging the outlet was “peddling a hoax for a pedophile,” while the Trump administration is working to deport “criminal illegal alien predators from our communities and putting the safety of Americans first.”

Neither Goss nor the NBC affiliate has responded to the growing criticism over their reporting of Rojas-Leyva’s arrest.
