WASHINGTON, DC – Earlier in October, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the launch of a new operation dubbed “Operation River Wall,” with the goal of the operation being to fortify border security along the Rio Grande River via the strategic deployment of U.S. Coast Guard forces.
Homeland Security announced their latest operation to address the southern border on October 20th, citing Operation River Wall as a means “to secure the Rio Grande against illegal immigration, narco-terrorists, and other criminal activity at our Southern Border.” A pivotal part of the operation includes the mobilization of U.S. Coast Guard forces, with Homeland Security noting that in excess of 100 boats will be deployed throughout the Rio Grande area at the onset of the operation.
Securing the highlighted “260 miles of the Rio Grande Valley” is no small feat, with Homeland Security entrusting Coast Guard Forces Rio Grande’s “unique capabilities and experience” as just the skillset needed to address an area of the southern border notorious for its vulnerabilities.
Administration officials say the U.S. Coast Guard will assist in deploying an increase in response boats to various areas when needed, as well as employing additional “shallow watercraft, command and control assets, and tactical teams,” in an effort to bridge the proverbial gaps that have historically plagued the Rio Grande Valley portion of the southern border.
Secretary Noem issued a statement following the unveiling of Operation River Wall, commending the work of President Donald Trump thus far in addressing the border crisis inherited after taking office this past January while also ensuring the public that the U.S. Coast Guard will help deliver on the promise to keep the nation’s borders secure.
“President Trump delivered the most secure southern border in U.S. history in record time, and now, our goal is to make sure it stays that way for the long run,” Secretary Noem stated, adding, “The men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard are experts at defending America’s maritime borders - they have been doing that with honor, respect and devotion to duty since 1790. Now, Coast Guard Forces Rio Grande and Operation River Wall will be a force multiplier in defending against illegal immigration.”
U.S. Coast Guard Acting Commandant Admiral Kevin Lundy also shared a statement in light of Operation River Wall launching, saying, “The U.S. Coast is the best in the world at tactical boat operations and maritime interdiction at sea, along coasts, and in riverine environments. Through Operation River Wall, the Coast Guard is controlling the U.S. southern border in the Rio Grande River in eastern Texas.”
