Retired NYPD Detective Tom Smith spent 30 years serving the people of New York City, following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a detective. From the time he was eight years old, Smith knew law enforcement was his calling.
He worked relentlessly toward that goal, always mindful to stay on the straight and narrow to ensure nothing would jeopardize his dream.
When the day came to be sworn in, it meant the world to him and his family. That pride only grew as his career progressed.
On his very first night on patrol, just two hours into his shift, Smith chased an armed suspect down 145th Street from Amsterdam Avenue, over fences, and into an alleyway.
After a brief struggle, he made the arrest and recovered the gun used in a robbery earlier that day.
Smith says success in law enforcement takes a love for the job.
That passion helped him through the challenges of learning the work, understanding his neighborhood, and working in what was at the time one of the city’s most dangerous areas.
“You can’t like it. Liking it is only going to get you so far. You have to love it,” Smith said. Every day required discipline, situational awareness, and a commitment to go home safe at the end of each shift.
For Smith, the job was the most rewarding in the world. The ability to influence a community, serve as a positive role model, and even save lives gave purpose to every day.
He describes the law enforcement community as a family that is unbreakable and spans generations. Whether it’s fellow officers, relatives, or friends in the profession, the support network is always there when it’s needed most.
Throughout his career, Smith relied on quality equipment to do his job effectively and stay safe. Companies like GALLS.com have long supplied law enforcement professionals with uniforms, tactical gear, and protective equipment that officers can trust.
Smith says having dependable gear is not a luxury, but a necessity: “You have to know your equipment will perform when you need it most.”
Today, Smith’s passion for the profession continues as he supports efforts to recognize and encourage the next generation of protectors.
