PHOENIX, AZ - Authorities are investigating a shooting that took place at Sky Harbor Airport that left three people injured by gunfire and another person stabbed after an alleged family dispute.
According to FOX 8, the Phoenix Police Department (PPD) said that the shooting incident happened around 9:45 p.m. on December 25th at an airport restaurant that is located outside the security checkpoint in Terminal four. Police said that an adult female and two adult males were shot, leaving them with life-threatening injuries.
The two men are now in stable condition and expected to survive. The female remains in critical condition and the man hospitalized with at least one stab wound is in stable condition. Police said that all of the people involved knew each other and had a physical fight that led to one of them pulling out a gun. PPD Sgt. Mayra Reeson said in a statement, "I do believe that this was a family dispute that escalated."
According to AZ Central, police detained two people, an underage girl and the adult male with the stab wound, in connection with the shooting. Their identities have not yet been released. Reeson said that one gun was recovered from the scene.
The gunfire led to the temporary closure of a security checkpoint at the terminal, the closure of some restaurants, and a pause in service at the terminal's PHX Sky Train Station. Reeson said, "Of course this was scary. This was Christmas evening. Everybody's trying to get home."
Reeson said that in a "completely unrelated" incident after the shooting and stabbing, a man showed up at the airport with a gun late Wednesday night. She said, "This man received a text message that he believed there was an active shooter at Sky Harbor." The man then got into an altercation with a police officer and was arrested inside the airport. He as booked into a local jail. Reeson said, "There was no active shooter. There never was."
Around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, officers were seen taking a man without shoes or a shirt into custody, moments before another officer was seen carrying two firearms, including a handgun, in an evidence bag. That man was identified as 21-year-old Cole Nenon. PPD said that Nenon said he was told by a relative at the airport that a shooting had occurred earlier in the evening.
Just before 11:25 p.m., Nenon reportedly approached a Phoenix officer who was standing near the shooting scene and began yelling at him. The officer told him to stop, but he did not listen. Nenon is facing aggravated assault charges after spitting on the officer and striking him during the struggle to arrest him.
Marvin Miller, a cleaner at the airport for three years said he heard three gunshots in succession from the lower-level ticketing area of Terminal four. He said, "I heard three shots. They were different from fireworks. Gunshots are a big difference." He reflected on safety concerns he saw at the airport. Anyone from the outside is able to walk into the airport's terminal, he said.
