How These Florida Cops Turned a DUI Arrest Into a Surprise DoorDash Delivery

CAPE CORAL, FL – Cape Coral Police officers arrested a DoorDash driver earlier in November over a suspected DUI, but went above and beyond following the arrest by delivering the food held by the driver to the awaiting customer.

On the evening of November 20th, Cape Coral Police officers responded to the area of Skyline Boulevard and Cape Coral Parkway after receiving reports of an individual who appeared to be asleep at the wheel while stopped at a traffic light. Upon arriving at the scene, officers approached the unconscious driver who was later identified as 25-year-old Luis Angel Alania Estrella.

Estrella’s vehicle was reportedly still running when officers encountered him while he was “asleep and unresponsive,” according to officials, with a subsequent DUI investigation finding probable cause to place Estrella under arrest. Authorities say subsequent testing found the suspect harbored a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .15 which is nearly double the legal limit in Florida.

What makes this particular DUI arrest out of Florida notable isn’t just the potential lives saved from removing a suspected impaired driver from the road, but what the arresting officers did when realizing they took into custody a DoorDash driver with an active order en route.

According to a press release from the Cape Coral Police Department regarding the arrest, “In an effort to assist the community member awaiting their meal, one of the responding officers took the initiative to deliver the food order to its final destination,” adding that the effort “helped ensure the resident received the meal safely and without unnecessary delay.”

When speaking to the local media outlets about the courtesy, Officer Mercedes Simonds stated, “Having that officer stop by, I'm sure the people were not expecting to have an officer show up at their door, but in this case, hopefully they were happy that they were there.”

A spokesperson for DoorDash confirmed that Estrella’s account on the food delivery app has since been terminated, further noting in their statement, “We’re grateful to local law enforcement for keeping the community safe and going above and beyond to deliver this customer’s dinner.”
