How A Florida McDonald’s Meltdown Ended in Gunfire

DAVENPORT, FL - Authorities with the Polk County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) say a Davenport McDonald's employee and two customers are facing charges after an argument in the drive-thru line ended with a shooting inside the store.

According to an arrest affidavit, Peter Story and Nicholas Jones were in the drive-thru and became frustrated with Yoan Soto when he told the pair that they were extremely busy and were not accepting orders, FOX 13 reported. Soto was working an overnight shift when Story and Jones came through the drive-thru.

Soto told them that the restaurant was "overwhelmed" with online orders. He apologized for the delay and even said that McDonald's should "think through" how their ordering system works to prevent future incidents, according to KATU

During the argument, a store manager told deputies that Story and Jones threatened "to beat Soto's a**" and said they would wait in the parking lot for his shift to end. The pair then entered the store and got into a verbal confrontation with Soto, having to be separated by the store manager.

During the physical altercation, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said that one of the men mentioned having a "switch" and a "30-clip." That is when Soto reportedly grabbed a gun from the back of the store and pointed it at Story and Jones. Surveillance video shows Soto advancing on Jones and pushing him before turning toward Story. A physical struggle ensued, and the gun discharged.

"Now, the 22-year-old manager steps between them trying to stop this kerfuffle from occurring because there's a rattle afoot right now in McDonald's, we can call it a 'McRattle,' and that's not a sandwich," Judd said.

The story was struck in the neck by the shot, and authorities said that the injury is not life-threatening. He is expected to make a full recovery. "It's a blessing that it was a very minor wound, but you know what? When you start shooting McGuns, you get people's McAttention," Judd said. After the incident, Soto collected the shell casing on the floor and told an employee that "it belonged to him."

"He has a right to stand his ground and protect himself, and these guys are threatening to do violence after they have already threatened on the outside of the store and came inside," Judd said. "They created a well-founded fear in him and the store manager. It was just a McMess, but we will sort it out because we are McGood at investigating McCrime."

Judd also highlighted that Soto's manager told him to stop taking orders, and it was not a decision Soto made himself. Soto was charged with tampering with physical evidence. Jones and Story were charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing, and failing to leave after being warned. Jones is 18, Story is 20, and Soto is 21.
