Florida man arrested plotting assassination attempt against congressman

MARGATE, FL - Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) revealed a plot to assassinate him at the hands of a convicted felon arrested in possession of firearms. The Florida Democrat was reportedly informed by the Margate Police Department after they placed John Lapinski, 41, into custody on October 31st.

According to CBS News, Margate PD investigators found multiple firearms and body armor when searching Lapinski’s residence after reports came in of shots being fired. He was initially detained under the Florida Mental Health Act before being booked at the Broward County Jail on three charges for possession of firearms by a felon.

Reporting from Local10 revealed that Lapinski possessed a Glock handgun, shotguns, a rifle with optics, and homemade suppressors found in his bedroom and safe, all of which were illegal for him to possess with his criminal record.

Police said in a press release, "During the investigation, our detectives located several firearms and evidence that indicated he may have been planning some type of criminal act.” Margate officials then contacted the Broward Sheriff's Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as the FBI. The outlet reported that ATF is currently leading the investigation.

Rep. Moscowitz described the threat to him in a post to X, saying, "Found with him was a manifesto, among other things, included antisemitic rhetoric and only my name on the 'target' list. There are many other details that I will not disclose as I do not want to interfere with an ongoing investigation."

"I understand the failures and importance of fixing the protection of our current Commander-in-Chief and Vice President," Moskowitz continued. "At the same time I am deeply worried about congressional member security and the significant lack thereof when we are in the district. Regardless of our political affiliations or differences, we all have families we want to keep safe."

As of this report, there has been no mention of involvement from the U.S. Capitol Police, which expanded operations throughout the nation in 2021 to handle threats against members of Congress and Senators following the January 6th Capitol incident.
