Florida: Miami-Dade Deputy Slain in Line of Duty—Community Mourns Fallen Hero

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FL - A Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputy was fatally shot after being brutally attacked while responding to a traffic crash in Southwest Miami-Dade.

On Friday evening, November 7, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero Stutz said that 27-year-old Deputy Devin Jaramillo was shot and killed in the area of a warehouse near Southwest 128th Street and 122nd Avenue earlier that afternoon, WSVN reported.

"Today is not okay: what happened today in Miami-Dade County and to our deputy was not okay, and today will never be okay," said Cordero Stutz. "I ask our community to pray for the family of our fallen deputy, to pray for all of us because we are a family and we are hurting."

Upon shots being fired, Cordero Stutz said good Samaritans called 911. A source close to the investigation told NBC6 that the deputy was dispatched to a crash when one of the parties attacked him. After the gunfire, the assailant went back to a green Ford Mustang and shot himself to death, the source said.

Deputies arrived on scene and immediately provided aid and worked with him as he was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. Despite providing life-saving measures, Jaramillo succumbed to his injuries. Cordero Stutz said Jaramillo was "not only a deputy. He's a son, brother, and friend." Before the press conference, several law enforcement agencies lined the street of Southwest 117th Avenue and Bird Road as they waited for news of their colleague.

Several fire trucks, ladder trucks, and an American flag also lined the streets, showing signs of a procession for the fallen officer. Multiple deputies were also seen forming a prayer circle outside the entrance to the hospital's emergency room. The procession for the fallen deputy happened late Friday night.

Several officers across multiple municipalities escorted the rescue truck as it transported Jaramillo to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's Office. Upon arrival at the medical examiner's office, they were met with a hero's salute, with an American flag hung high above Northwest 10th Avenue in Miami.

Jaramillo, who served in Miami-Dade's Kendall district, graduated from the agency in 2024 after working for the Coral Gables Police Department. He was described as having an unwavering commitment to protect others. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and other county officials joined law enforcement as Jaramillo was transferred with dignity inside.

"I wanna thank all of our fellow law enforcement agencies that stepped up today to help us, to support us, to send words of encouragement," said Cordero Stutz.

The warehouse incident that led to the fatal shooting appeared to center around a green Ford Mustang that was covered with a tarp and parked outside the warehouse. One subject is reportedly deceased, and another was detained after a brief search for them. It is unclear how they were involved in the shooting.

As the investigation into the incident continues, officers from across South Florida will shoulder the pain of losing one of their own. "The next few days are going to be very difficult for us, and we will continue to make this county safe," said Cordero Stutz.
