How A Jolly Christmas Meal Ended In Grisly Gunfire

MIAMI, FL – A 50-year-old woman is currently behind bars in Miami on aggravated battery charges after authorities claim she non-fatally shot her son at a restaurant parking lot on Christmas day. The woman is reportedly claiming she acted in self-defense after her son was acting “disrespectful” toward her.

On December 25th, what started as a Christmas day brunch reportedly took a wild turn, as authorities allege a woman identified as Roseita Lavette Smith shot her son in the parking lot of the Red Rooster in Miami following some sort of verbal dispute between the two.

The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. at the restaurant located along the 900 block of Second Avenue after the unnamed victim and Smith had shared a Christmas day meal with other family members at the establishment. Police say the victim and Smith had been argumentative during the meal, with said verbal dispute continuing outside as they made their way into Smith’s vehicle.

According to police, Smith had accused her son of being “disrespectful” towards her and others present at the family gathering, leading to the victim reportedly opting to leave Smith’s vehicle. As the victim made his way out of the car, investigators say Smith exited the vehicle as well and fired a single gunshot, striking her son in the thigh.

By the time police arrived at the scene, Smith had reportedly already fled the area whereas the victim was found lying on the ground and bleeding from his left thigh. First responders tended to the injured individual before getting him transferred to an area hospital where he was last listed as being in stable condition.

Miami Police caught up with Smith later in the day following the incident, placing her under arrest and booking her in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a charge of aggravated battery with a weapon. When speaking with investigators, Smith allegedly told police she shot her son in self-defense after he threatened to assault her and was refusing to leave the vehicle, claiming she’s endured prior incidents with her son purportedly acting violently.

Jail records show Smith is currently being held without bond with prosecutors treating the case as a domestic violence incident.
