Inside the Fast-Moving Collapse of the Old Oil Cartel System

WASHINGTON, DC- While Democrats and their complicit left-wing media portray President Donald Trump as an unhinged madman, those who know him and anyone with eyes wide open realize that while presidents such as Bush, Obama, and Biden played checkers, Trump is playing four-dimensional chess.

Example one was the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January of this year on drug trafficking warrants. As a result of Maduro’s arrest, the U.S. gained de facto control of Venezuela’s oil assets. Step one.

Two months ago, President Trump ordered a bombing campaign against the radical Iranian regime. Two months later, the Strait of Hormuz is closed due to a U.S. naval blockade, and Iran’s oil is now stuck either underground, in storage tanks, or on oil tankers that have nowhere to go. Step two.

Now, according to Gen. Michael Flynn’s Substack, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is walking away from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Founded in 1960, OPEC has had 12 member countries, including the UAE, which will now depart the organization on May 1. OPEC has an obscene influence on the global oil market and holds about 30% of the global supply of oil.

Despite having 12 countries, the UAE is one of the three largest producers of oil in the cartel. Not anymore.

As Flynn noted, for over 50 years, OPEC has had significant control over what Americans pay at the pump, despite the U.S. being “energy independent.” As a speculative market, what OPEC does has a huge impact on the global price of oil. As witnessed in 1974, OPEC uses energy as a weapon against the U.S. and our allies.

President Trump, as Flynn noted, has called OPEC a “rigged system designed to rip off the American people and the rest of the free world.” He is not wrong. And that is why the UAE’s exit from OPEC can be credited in part to President Trump’s leadership.

Trump, by the campaign against Iran, the capture of Maduro, and a recent deal with Indonesia to purchase American oil, is proving to OPEC that, to paraphrase former President Nixon, “You won’t have the United States to kick around anymore.”

For far too long, the United States has been beholden to the whims of Middle Eastern sheiks and mullahs. It impacted not only the price we pay at the pump, but also our national security, a point highlighted by Flynn.

“Every fracture inside that cartel [OPEC] is a direct win for American families, American workers, American industry, and American sovereignty,” Flynn wrote. “The UAE Energy Secretary said it in plain language, declaring that his country now operates with no obligations and full flexibility.”

Flynn wrote that what this means is the UAE is “done taking orders from a system that was built to manipulate global supply and punish nations that refuse to comply.”

One cannot help but think that one of the drivers of the UAE’s move was that when the U.S. began its operation against Iran, that country retaliated by firing missiles at its Middle Eastern neighbors, including the UAE. Nothing can fracture a relationship faster than launching some missiles at civilian targets, including its international airport and hotels. Clearly, the UAE believes that Iran can no longer be trusted.

Flynn wrote that he believes the UAE’s OPEC exit is only the first step and that more dominoes will fall.

“This development is far bigger than oil. This is the old world order coming apart at the seams, and a new realignment is forming in its place. That realignment is being built on strength, on sovereignty, and on the steady leadership of President Trump, with the American people standing with him.”

In its statement announcing its withdrawal from OPEC, the UAE wrote:

“The UAE reaffirmed that its production policies will be guided by responsibility and market stability, taking into account global supply and demand.

‘It will continue investing across the energy value chain, including oil, gas, renewables, and low-carbon solutions, to support resilience and long-term energy system transformation.

“The UAE values more than five decades of cooperation with partners and will continue active engagement in support of stable global energy markets.”
