Former long-time law enforcement officer Derrick Dotson has ventured into the world of writing, bringing a children's book that aims to teach how to interact safely with police.

Released in November of 2022, The Police and Me is a result of Dotson watching the media and political leaders fail in calming the public after several widely publicized deaths of black Americans while in police custody.

"Recognizing the critical need for resources that help children and families understand the role of law enforcement and how to interact with them safely, Dotson leveraged his extensive background to create materials that would make a tangible impact," the book's publisher said in a press release. "His debut book, 'The Police and Me,' serves as a catalyst for conversations between parents and children about engaging with police officers responsibly.

"Through his innovative initiatives, Derrick Dotson is igniting conversations that can reshape the narrative of policing in communities across the country."

Dotson has collaborated with organizations like the Police Athletic League (PAL), Jack and Jill of America, YMCA, Big Brother/Big Sister, and Boys and Girls Club to help bring "open dialogue and learning."

"One prime example of his dedication was his visit to the Syracuse PAL in upstate New York, where he conducted readings of 'The Police and Me' for over 1000 children in the community," the press release said. "This event, coupled with his involvement in the organization's annual Midnight Madness Tournament, underscores his commitment to building trust and understanding between law enforcement and young people.

"Derrick Dotson is now extending a nationwide invitation to police departments to participate in his mission by becoming ambassadors for positive change. He's introducing the concept of 'Adopt a Police Department,' where businesses and citizens can purchase books for departments in their communities. This initiative has the potential to not only increase community trust but also provide educational resources that strengthen police-civilian interactions.

"Derrick Dotson's work has attracted considerable attention, and he's excitedly awaiting responses from various police departments. Notably, the Seattle Police Department holds a special place in his aspirations. The community has underscored the importance of the Seattle Police Department's participation in these conversations. The potential collaboration between Dotson and the Seattle Police Department signifies a significant step towards mutual understanding and community harmony."

"I believe that education and open dialogue are key to building trust and understanding between police officers and the communities they serve," Dotson said.
