WASHINGTON, DC - A reportedly planned Charlie Kirk “lookalike contest” seemingly slated to take place at Georgetown University is drawing criticism from fans of the late conservative influencer and university officials alike, as the floated idea originating from a social media platform exclusive to university students is largely believed to be an attempt to mock Kirk’s assassination.
According to reports, an anonymous post shared on the social media platform Fizz was advertising a purported Charlie Kirk “lookalike contest” to Georgetown University students for September 10, which is the anniversary of Kirk’s assassination. The post further reads, “Pull up to Copley Lawn to speak the truth while the cost is high.”
Fizz is reportedly a growing social media platform popular across college campuses that claims that if a user is “a college student, your community is closed and the privacy of the community is maintained through the requirement of a valid university email or proof of enrollment.” Apparently, the aforementioned post, which some believe to be meant to mock Kirk’s death, gained significant traction on the platform, reportedly receiving over 2,200 upvotes on a campus consisting of approximately 6,000 undergrads.
The Turning Point USA chapter at Georgetown University has since responded to the reportedly planned event, having set up a table on campus with various signs and stickers condemning the alleged “lookalike contest” seen as making light of the conservative nonprofit founder’s death.
Additional posts from the campus’ Fizz platform have also included calls for an Erika Kirk lookalike contest, with one anonymous respondent reportedly asking, “Can the winner of the Charlie Kirk one be prom king with the winner of this?” Another user on the platform reportedly suggested the school’s choral group, The Georgetown Chimes, perform a rendition of the song “We Are Charlie Kirk,” an AI-generated song released days after Kirk’s death that has since been used by the late conservative influencer’s critics to mock him posthumously.
Given the anonymous nature of Fizz, the local Turning Point USA chapter is unsure who originally created the post calling for the ostensibly crass event. Chapter President Heidi Sui shared in a statement on the matter that the chapter “strongly condemns any events that aim to disrespect Charlie Kirk and the upcoming memorial ceremony at UVU,” further adding, “This reaction from Georgetown students should disturb us regardless of our political affiliation. There is a difference between disagreeing with someone’s politics and celebrating their death.”
The university is also looking into the matter, with a spokesperson saying, “We have seen no activity on campus related to these posts. Georgetown is not planning such an event and, to our knowledge, no student organization is hosting or planning such an event. We take these anonymous posts seriously and condemn their language as deeply inconsistent with Georgetown University’s values. We are monitoring this closely to ensure the safety of the University community.”
University officials are aware that freedom of expression affords limited options for staff to outwardly prohibit any such display, but they wanted to emphasize in their statement, “making light of a victim of violence is counter to our values and deeply disappointing. Students are expected to know the policies that guide life on campus, including the Speech and Expression policy and the Code of Student Conduct.”
