Terre Haute, IN: Anyone who knew Greg Ferency would give you the same exact message: he was charming, friendly, would go to any length to help people, and was one of the best, most highly skilled law enforcement officers any department would love to have on their team.

He led a brilliant career that spanned decades and successfully held just about every specialized position a police department could offer. He was the equivalent of “everything he touches turns to law enforcement gold.”

But his career and life were senselessly cut short after a lowlife ambushed and shot him as he exited a federal building on July 7th of 2021. Greg was able to return fire but eventually succumbed to the injuries.

His tragic and untimely death shattered the law enforcement community, leaving a hole no one could fill. His beloved nature was simply impossible to match.

The legacy he left behind as a skilled LEO and an overall great human being was too strong to ignore. It came as no surprise, and was well deserved, that he was posthumously inducted into the National Law Enforcement Hall of Fame.

The National Law Enforcement Officer Hall of Fame was created to honor Law Enforcement Officers. The purpose is to recognize those officers who have gone above and beyond in one way or another in the line of duty, their website states.

This induction meant a lot to his sister, Shelley Klingerman, who founded a nonprofit organization (as a result of Greg’s untimely death) to help LEOs and their families, Project Never Broken.

"One of the biggest concerns from the perspective of friends and family is that Greg’s work, contributions, and dedication to the job will be forgotten; especially since we’ve not gone to trial yet. This induction will permanently mark his work in history," Shelley exclusively told LET.

Greg was known for his humility and gentle nature. He never sought out recognition or fanfare; he simply wanted to help others.

He symbolized what many other law enforcement professionals do today - go to work, help people, and get the job done. Shelley wants the LEO community to know America appreciates what police officers do.

"Most people who admire, respect, and support our LEO’s don’t speak out or show it. Like most issues, you only hear from the non-supporters or naysayers. I would first confidently tell LEOs that the vast majority of people DO indeed support them. However, we need to do a better job of speaking up and showing it so they SEE and HEAR it. I think we, as a collective society, are having more opportunities to better understand the dynamics of the job, and the toll it takes on those who are willing to serve and run towards danger," Shelley said.

Project Never Broken

One of the reasons Shelley founded Project Never Broken was to support the LEO community and to relieve her of some of the stress from the tragic death of her brother Greg.

She has helped countless LEOs and their families since the inception of Project Never Broken with various events and workshops.

The next event is unique.

"In an effort to bring purpose to something that was so senseless and evil, our goal is to take one senseless and evil act and make something profoundly positive come from it. That vision right now is, Cruise with a Purpose,” Shelley said.

She continued, “We are currently working on all the details, but we want to help 1,290 LEO and their significant others (645 LE couples) get the help, resources and support they need to continue to do the job and keep their lives and families healthy.”

You can contact Shelley Klingerman and the organization at 812-230-1888 or by email at shelley@projectneverbroken.org for any questions or if you would like to sponsor a law enforcement officer to go on the healing cruise. The sponsorship amount is $1,299, which was Greg Ferencys’ Badge number. For more information, click HERE
