KISSIMMEE, FL - On Friday, December 5, a hostage situation broke out at a Kissimmee apartment complex, leading to the suspect being fatally shot by deputies who responded.

Deputies with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office said that they responded to the Jamison Apartments near Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway and Partin Settlement Road around 10:40 a.m. to "investigate a domestic battery," News6 reported.

However, when deputies tried to contact the 30-year-old alleged suspect, he shut and locked the apartment door. "We monitored the suspect as he went on Facebook Live," investigators said. "He made suicidal remarks and displayed a handgun." Throughout the day, hostage negotiators and family members tried to convince the suspect to put down his firearm and surrender to deputies, according to the sheriff's office.

By Friday afternoon, deputies deployed a chemical agent to persuade the suspect to surrender, and he left the building before assuming a "prone position on the ground," deputies said.

"The suspect still had the handgun in his hand and was pointing it at his head," deputies added. "Just before 9:00 p.m., the suspect fired his weapon and deputies returned fire, striking the suspect." The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will now investigate the shooting. Residents, both on their phones and from the parking lot outside the crime scene tape, witnessed the unfolding situation, WESH reported. Many expressed anger over the lack of information and the extended time they had to be out of their homes without a place to stay, raising security concerns.

"They also had the helicopters. They had the drones; there were a lot, and it was very scary. I feel bad for the building and for the kids," one resident said. "Very scary, very worrisome."
