California Thieves Catch Themselves Red-Handed When They Take Selfies During $100k Heist

AMERICAN CANYON, CA - Well, nobody ever accused criminals of being the brightest bulbs. Two knucklehead California men accused of stealing over $100,000 worth of tools, copper wire, and vehicles, thought it was a good idea to take selfies of themselves while in the midst of committing the crimes, according to authorities.

Fox News Digital reported that the thefts occurred during a burglary on July 6 at the 1100 block of Green Island Road in American Canyon, California.

Police investigators were able to identify two vehicles connected to the burglary and shared that with neighboring law enforcement authorities. The next day, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office stopped one of the vehicles and detained the driver, identified as Daniel Lemas, 53, of Hayward, California.

Among the evidence recovered during the investigation were selfies Lemas took of himself committing the burglary. Lemas was placed under arrest and charged with burglary; he was booked into the Napa County Department of Corrections on multiple felony charges resulting from the investigation.

On July 8, the Hayward Police Department effected a stop of the second vehicle identified as being involved with the burglary and detained the driver, identified as Dennis Tylij, 49, of Hayward. American Canyon police responded to the scene and arrested Tylij, who was also booked into the Napa County Department of Corrections on a felony conspiracy charge.

American Canyon police released a photo of a man with a mask that obscures his face below the eyes while looking at the camera and posing in what appears to be an industrial-sized spool of wire. There was another photo of hundred-dollar bills laid out on a counter, The New York Times reported.

Police later conducted a search warrant at a home in Hayward where some of the stolen property was recovered. The California Post reported that Lemas posted a $25,000 bail and was released while Tylij remains in jail.
