Houston Offers New Home to New York Officers Unhappy With Mamdani Victory

HOUSTON, TX – A Houston Police union is reportedly trying to capitalize on the contentious mayoral election which occurred earlier in November in New York City, with said union enticing NYPD officers who were “disgusted” with the election outcome to make their way over to the Houston Police Department.

The election of Zohran Mamdani as New York City’s next mayor was one that captured national attention, with good reason. Mamdani’s campaign platform and subsequent election showcases a shift in New York politics which has been foreshadowed for roughly the past decade, with party progressives having slowly diminished the once-prominent sheen of the moderate Democrat.

While Mamdani’s secured victory in the mayoral race garnered national concern and criticism, with even President Donald Trump throwing in a late tacit endorsement for Democrat Andrew Cuomo in an effort help avoid Mamdani securing victory, the people who’ll face the repercussions of said election will be New Yorkers.

As previously reported in Law Enforcement Today, Mamdani was endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which said progressive outfit isn’t exactly fond of traditional policing – as their political platform proudly boasts an ongoing effort to “defund” and ultimately “abolish” the police.

While the notion of defunding the police may sound like a relic of the 2020 BLM era, with subsequent national surveys finding that said endeavor is wildly unpopular, the effort is still alive and well within the DSA agenda. Given the uncertainty on what policing in New York City will look like in the coming years, the Houston Police Officers’ Union opted to attract NYPD officers who may feel disaffected by Mamdani being elected as their new mayor.

In a November 5th post to Facebook, the union posted an image with a question and call to action reading, “NYPD, are you disgusted with the election of Zohran Mamdani? Join us! The Houston Police Department is hiring police officers!” The posted image highlighted competitive pay and benefits, as well as the more reasonable economic and social climate compared to New York City.

Mamdani’s past comments regarding police officers, calling them “racist” and “corrupt,” among other disparaging remarks, haunted the candidate along the campaign trail, culminating in Mamdani giving a public apology during a Fox News interview this past October.

“I apologize because of the fact that I’m looking to work with these officers,” Mamdani said in the October interview, adding, “And I know that these officers, these men and women who serve in the NYPD, they put their lives on the line every single day.”

Whether or not Mamdani’s public apology resonated with the rank and file of the NYPD remains to be seen, but a mass migration of officers leaving the NYPD would certainly be telling if it comes to fruition either before or during Mamdani’s term in office.
