How ICE Is Taking on Human Trafficking One Victim at a Time

WASHINGTON, DC – Homeland Security issued a press release earlier in January highlighting the outfit’s “Blue Campaign,” which is centered around shining a national spotlight on Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) efforts to combat human trafficking while enabling victim support and community partnerships.

On January 20th, Homeland Security issued a press release pertaining to their Blue Campaign, which is an effort led by ICE which coincides with National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Touted as a “national public awareness initiative” by Homeland Security, the release emphasizes ICE’s ongoing efforts to put an end to human trafficking within the United States.

“ICE is reaffirming its commitment to protecting victims, holding traffickers accountable, and strengthening partnerships that prevent exploitation and modern-day slavery,” the press release reads, further noting, “Throughout January, the Blue Campaign is leading and supporting a series of outreach events, trainings and awareness initiatives designed to educate the public and empower communities to recognize and report human trafficking.”

During the ongoing, monthlong awareness campaign, ICE has engaged in the following alongside their standard duties:

  •          On January 11th, ICE promoted the hashtag “WearBlueDay” which fell on National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, encouraging members of the public to wear blue while spreading awareness to the cause.
  •          The agency is actively hosting public-facing and web-based trainings to help educate the public on how to identify and report suspected human trafficking.
  •          Partnerships are being formed with those in the transportation, hospitality, education and aviation industries in order to help increase human trafficking prevention while also educating on early identification.
  •          ICE is also providing resources to victims of human trafficking so that survivors can ensure they receive the needed support and protection.

James Harris, who serves as Homeland Security Investigations’ (HSI) Assistant Director for Countering Transnational Organized Crime, issued a statement in tandem with the press release, giving accolades to ICE regarding the agency’s continued efforts to curtail the “brutal” act of human trafficking.

“Human trafficking is a brutal crime that preys on the vulnerable and threatens the safety of our communities,” Assistant Director Harris stated, adding, “Through the Blue Campaign, ICE continues to lead the charge in raising awareness, supporting survivors, and aggressively pursuing those who exploit others for profit. Awareness is prevention, and prevention saves lives.”
