WASHINGTON, DC – A Homeland Security press release announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer for a criminal illegal alien out of California accused of killing an 11-year-old boy in a hit-and-run just before the Thanksgiving holiday. According to Homeland Security, the subject in question had been previously removed from the country on four separate occasions.
On November 26th, police responded to the scene where 11-year-old Aiden Antonio Torres De Paz was reportedly struck by a vehicle outside of his home at approximately 5:00 p.m. near the intersection of East Washington Avenue and Hickory Street in Escondido, California. According to Escondido Police officials, the young boy went into the street to retrieve a soccer ball when a driver struck him and subsequently fled the scene.
Aiden was rushed to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego following the incident but sadly passed away on Thanksgiving morning due to his sustained injuries. Police later identified a suspect believed to have been the driver at the center of the tragedy, 44-year-old Hector Balderas Amador, taking him into custody on November 29th on charges of felony hit-and-run causing death.
Escondido Police Chief Ken Plunkett issued a statement following Amador’s arrest, saying, “We are grateful and appreciative for the trust and partnership our police department shares with the community, which aided in the identification and arrest of the driver in this tragic incident.”
Amador is currently being housed at the Vista Detention Facility, according to reports, and has had his bail set at $100,000.
In Homeland Security’s press release regarding the detainer issued by ICE, the agency is calling on Governor Gavin Newsom to ensure their detainer is honored despite the history of said detainers being ignored in the past. Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement regarding Amador’s arrest and history of illegally reentering the country after his numerous removals, highlighting how sanctuary protections within the state “threaten to put this killer back onto California’s streets.”
“Thanksgiving should be a day of celebrating family and giving gratitude, but instead the family of Aiden Antonio Torres De Paz mourned this beautiful child’s death because a criminal illegal alien stole his life,” McLaughlin stated.
He added, “Now, sanctuary laws threaten to put this killer back onto California’s streets. Hector Balderas-Amador was previously removed four times before he chose to commit a felony and illegally re-enter the country a fifth time. Gavin Newsom, we are calling on you to do the right thing and honor ICE’s arrest detainer.”
