Illinois Congresswoman Moves to Protect Roads From Sanctuary State Negligence

WASHINGTON, DC – Republican Congresswoman Mary Miller, an ardent critic of Governor J.B. Pritzker from her home state of Illinois, is slated to introduce legislation meant to curtail the efforts of sanctuary states and cities who are “gambling with American lives” through their endorsement and harboring of illegal aliens.

Speaking with Fox News Digital about the impending legislation, Rep. Miller’s office said the bill is tentatively titled the SAFE Driving Laws Act, with the aforementioned looming legislation aiming to upend practices by the nearly twenty states who conjure an “extreme level of risk for all those on the road” by allowing illegal aliens the opportunity to obtain both individual and commercial driver’s licenses.

Taking aim at politicians within her home state, Rep. Miller stated, “sanctuary states like Illinois are gambling with American lives by handing out driver’s licenses and CDLs to illegal aliens.”

According to Rep. Miller’s office, if the legislation were to pass, the SAFE Driving Laws Act would withhold funding under the National Highway Performance and Surface Transportation Block Grant programs by 50 percent for all states not in compliance by October 2026.

A preliminary run of the numbers done by Rep. Miller’s office estimates that certain states who opt to remain out of compliance could lose out on millions and, in some instances, billions in funding – with California slated to lose nearly 2 billion dollars if the legislation is passed.

In a statement provided by California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office regarding the legislative endeavor, spokesperson Diana Crofts-Pelayo characterized the proposed law as “a witch hunt based on lies against states that follow federal law.”

It’s hardly a coincidence that the proposed legislation comes on the heels of an illegal immigrant who obtained a commercial driver’s license in California, Harjinder Singh, who is currently facing charges of vehicular homicide after allegedly killing three people when making an illegal U-turn this past August while driving on the Florida Turnpike in Fort Pierce.

Following an examination performed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, it was found that Singh could only identify one of four road signs presented to him during the exam as well as only correctly answer two of the twelve questions meant to gauge his understanding of the English language.

Outside of the potential of financial withholdings outlined with Rep. Miller’s proposed bill, the SAFE Driving Laws Act would also introduce mechanisms to penalize states who harbor policies or laws restricting state and local governments from collecting and sharing information relevant to immigration enforcement efforts with Homeland Security.
