AKRON, OH – After several days of jury deliberations regarding the contentious trial relating to the death of 17-year-old Ethan Liming, the jury in the case returned a not guilty verdict against the two defendants with respect to manslaughter charges and were unable to reach a verdict on an additional manslaughter charge against one of the defendants.

While the two defendants, Deshawn and Tyler Stafford, will face time behind bars on lesser assault charges, the family of the deceased was reasonably upset with the outcome in court on September 25th.

A third suspect in the case, Donovon Jones, had pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor assault charges in October of 2022 and received a suspended sentence at the time.

The background of the case can be best described as complicated, as the fatal beating delivered by the two brothers during the June 2nd, 2022, incident wasn’t exactly the spawn of some random targeting.

On the day of the incident, Liming had apparently been hanging out with some friends and targeting random strangers with a gel blaster pellet gun, essentially assaulting strangers in what he and his friends may have thought was a prank.

However, not everyone is going to react kindly to pranks involving being shot by a pellet gun.

Liming and his buddies eventually found themselves at the I Promise school in Akron, where the Stafford brothers and Jones were playing basketball when Liming and his friends apparently decided to target them with the pellet gun prank.

Needless to say, the trio were not exactly fond of being targeted with the pellet gun and a physical altercation ensued. Details of the case suggest the Stafford brothers doled out the most blows on Liming, apparently delivering punches and kicks to Liming after he’d already hit the ground.

Thus, the jurors were given a case where they had to account for the actions of Liming seemingly causing the altercation, and the physical response that proved deadly which was handed out by the defendants.

Based upon the rendered verdict, it would seem as though the actions of Liming and his friends leading up to the fatal incident weighed heavily in their decision.

In the two counts of manslaughter, one was not guilty and the other was no verdict for 21-year-old Deshawn Stafford, but he was found guilty of assault and aggravated assault.  Deshawn’s brother, Tyler, was found not guilty of manslaughter but guilty of assault. Sentencing for the two brothers is slated for October 26th.

In a statement shared by the Liming family regarding the verdict, the family claimed that they were “devastated by the outcome of this trial,” and can’t come to terms with “how three young men can get away with viciously beating their son, Ethan, to death.”
