How These Cops Are Making Sure Furry Friends Are Handled With Care

KAUKAUNA, WI - After authorities found a missing cat in a field instead of a local shelter, the Kaukauna Police Department (KPD) created a new policy for pets.

In a news release on November 3, KPD announced that all domesticated animals that police find or take custody of will be taken to the Fox Valley Humane Society, Yahoo News reported. The new policy comes after a missing cat was found in a field 15 minutes away from the police station on October 26.

A De Pere man initially found the cat on his mom's driveway in Kaukauna and called the police. A police officer said he would take the cat to the police station and keep the cat there until the Fox Valley Humane Society opened.

The cat's owner reunited with the cat after searching the field for several hours the next day, WBAY reported. KPD apologized to the cat's owner. "After taking an in-depth look at how this transpired, we realize that this incident could have been handled much better," KPD said in a statement. As a result of this incident, we made changes to our guidelines on how we handle animals at large. Moving forward, all domesticated animals that the Kaukauna Police Department takes custody of will be transported to the Fox Valley Humane Society."

"These new guidelines will take effect immediately, and every officer at the Kaukauna Police Department has been advised of this process. After the completion of an internal investigation, the officer involved with this incident has received corrective action. The Kaukauna Police Department would like to thank Walter's owners for their understanding in this incident, and we are glad Walter made it home safe."
