NY Democrats kill 'Laken's Law' bill in favor of the state's 'Sanctuary City' policies

ALBANY, NY - On Tuesday, May 14th, the Democrats effectively killed a bill that would have forced the state of New York to notify federal immigration officials when police departments arrest illegal immigrants.

According to the New York Post, the proposed legislation, called "Laken's Law," was named after the University of Georgia student who was allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant earlier this year. On Tuesday, during the chamber's Codes Committee meeting, Republicans tried to force the Democrats to at least consider the bill, but it was practically dead on arrival in the left-controlled state assembly.

The bill was introduced earlier in the year by Assemblyman Jarrett Gandolfo (R-Long Island) after a group of illegal immigrants were arrested over a physical altercation with two New York Police Department (NYPD) officers in Times Square and then freed before Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could be notified.

In a statement, Gandolfo said, "Laken's Law is common-sense legislation which would protect New Yorkers and ensure criminal migrants are held accountable. Because of today's vote, New York will remain a preferred destination of people illegally crossing our southern border, especially those who intend to commit crimes."

"Laken's Law," named after Laken Riley, is a law that Gondolfo and other Republicans hoped would counteract the "Sanctuary City" policies that have been adopted and embraced by the City and some other Democrat-led municipalities that help illegal immigrants by limiting the cooperation between local and federal authorities regarding immigration law.

The bill would require local law enforcement to send arrest records and fingerprints to ICE whenever New York authorities arrest a non-citizen. According to a press release from NY Senator Robert G. Ortt, Laken's Law would reinstate the 365 day maximum sentence for a class A misdemeanor and would repeal the "protect our courts act" of 2020 which was "designed to discourage cooperation and enforcement of federal immigration laws."

Riley's accused killer entered the country illegally, claimed asylum, and then failed to appear in United States court on a shoplifting charge that he incurred at a later date.

He then was arrested on a felony in New York City for allegedly endangering his five-year-old stepson and was freed by the authorities before ICE could try to stop his release. He then went on to allegedly kill Riley, who was a nursing student at the University of Georgia.

During the Codes Committee meeting on Tuesday, May 14th, Committee Chairman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx) said, "New York has held the position of protecting those who are coming to this country for a better life and to protect against aggressive immigration enforcement. This bill requires notification to ICE for somebody's who's accused — accused — of an offense which would result in their deportation and not everybody supports that."

After the meeting, Assembly Minority Leader William Barclay (R-Oswego) told the Post, "Today's vote shows New York Democrats are far more interested in protecting their 'sanctuary' policies than protecting the rest of us."

Back in March, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 7511, the Laken Riley Act, which is the legislation that will make it possible to give ICE and state governments more tools to the fight against illegal immigrant crimes. During that debate, Representative Mike Collins (R-GA), who authored the bill, urged his colleagues to support the bill and to continue fighting for the American people against the "lawlessness created by President Biden's border policies."

According to a press release from Collins, the Lake Riley Act does three things, "It condemns President Joe Biden's border policies, including catch and release, and calls on him to reinstate 'Remain in Mexico;' It would amend federal law to require ICE to issue detainers and take custody of illegal aliens who commit theft-related crimes, such as shoplifting, as defined by state and local; and it allows state Attorneys General to sue the Secretary of Homeland Security for injunctive relief if immigration actions such as parole, violation of detention requirements, or other policy failures harm that state or. its citizens."

People, you put these people in office, you getting what you voted for.I feel bad only for those who did not vote for them.

Thomas

I thought all states and federal agencies had the right, by their laws, tohold "anyone" charged with a felony for 72 hourd while checks were run with other enforcement agencies. If that is still the case then the shame is on them for not responding.

I ran this exact trail every single week of my college career. I guess I could have been snuffed out before I graduated, had a career, family, and the professionals at the AP would lie about the suspect bc it fits a preferred narrative. Ibarra is not merely an “Athens resident,” and Laken Riley and every other student was put in danger by not enforcing laws and allowing a man arrested 3x after crossing the border to hang out and work on campus. He had to escalate to alleged murder to be held and/or risk deportation. Good policies. Good work. This story even cites the 2018 murder of Mollie Tibbetts in IA as a reason solo female runners should be worried, *also without noting her killer was an illegal immigrant.* Just stop lying! "

Typical New York response! Sadly, the citizens get the short end of the stick!

Laurence

Those citizens are the ones who elect the Demo politicians, so they get what they deserve.

L

Just disgusting how citizens of this country mean nothing to democrats but they will defend illegals to the end. Stop voting for these low lives they show you time and time again they don't care about you or your families. They will always side with the illegals.

Laurence

The stupid voters are responsible.

Laurence

So-called "sanctuary" policies directly violate the Constitution, which prohibits illegal entry. The DemoSocialists deliberately encourage criminal illegals to invade our country, just as they favor native-born criminals.
