Police officer stabbed in the neck by irate bus passenger - it doesn't end well for the attacker

LINCOLN, NE - Authorities with the Lincoln Police Department (LPD) are investigating an incident where a man allegedly stabbed an officer and another responding officer shot and injured the armed suspect.

According to reports, the incident took place near the Lincoln Bus Depot located at North 52nd and Superior streets. Police said that an officer was stabbed by a man on board one of the busses. Another officer fired his duty weapon, shooting the man once. The suspect has been identified as a 27-year-old man from Chicago.

A passenger stated that they tried to pay the man's way before police were called to the disturbance. Skip Hall said, "I offered to pay the difference, but I don't think the bus driver heard me and things went south fast. I didn't have a chance to do anything."

The man reportedly boarded the departing bus without money for a ticket and then "failed to comply" with requests to exit the bus. LPD said that the man then began arguing and fighting with officers in the back of the bus.

Authorities said that the man lunged at and stabbed one officer in the neck with a knife. He reportedly ignored verbal commands to drop the weapon and then reached for that officer's firearm.

That is when another officer fired his weapon once, striking the suspect. There were about 20 passengers on the bus at the time of the incident, but thankfully, no passengers were injured.

Lincoln Police Chief Michon Morrow said, "I am grateful for our officers' bravery and am proud of LPD's swift and courageous response in a difficult situation that undoubtedly saved others from injury. I want to commend their resilience and compassion, exemplified in the way they've rallied around our injured officer. I visited with the officer overnight, who is recovering and in good spirits."

The officer injured in the stabbing suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The officer who fired his duty weapon at the suspect has been placed on adminsitrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital to get treatment for his non-life-threatening injuries.

Once released from the hospital, he will be charged with first-degree assault on an officer and use of a weapon to commit a felony. Authorities said that he had also stolen a recreational vehicle Chicago on Sunday, October 15th. It was reported missing Monday, October 16th and eventually found in Seward County.

In a statement, Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Bird said, "When one of our officers is injured in the line of duty, the impact is felt by our entire community."

The mayor added, " We are reminded of the incredible risks our officers take every day as they put their lives on the line to protect us. I am grateful for the service and sacrifices made by our officers and their families, and on behalf of our entire community, I exted my thoughts and support to our injured team member and family during their recovery."
