Los Angeles: Elderly Nanny Arrested for Abusing Infants, Authorities Seek Further Victims

LOS ANGELES, CA - A woman in her sixties who is a nanny has been arrested on an allegation of abusing an infant. Authorities were alerted to a suspected child abuse case reported at a local hospital on April 7.

After conducting an investigation, authorities confirmed that the infant had been physically abused. On April 15, 65-year-old Carolina Cobian was arrested for felony child abuse and charged by the Santa Monica prosecutor's office, according to PEOPLE. Cobian was later released on bail.

On April 24, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office filed one felony count of child endangerment. Cobian will appear in court for her arraignment on May 28. According to the press release from SMPD, detectives are seeking to identify any additional families who may have hired Cobian as a nanny, childcare provider, or caregiver, or anyone who may have information relevant to this investigation.

Per SMPD, details of the investigation have remained limited given the sensitive nature of the case. The SMPD shared tips for parents suspecting child abuse. "Parents and guardians should also consider unannounced check-ins, clear written expectations, and age-appropriate conversations with children about how to report if something feels wrong or unsafe," SMPD wrote.

"Possible warning signs may include unexplained injuries, sudden changes in behavior, fearfulness around a caregiver, reluctance to be left alone, or explanations that do not match the circumstances," authorities said. "Any immediate safety concern should be reported to law enforcement right away."
