BATON ROUGE, LA - Crystal Harris, 43, was arrested in Baton Rouge on August 4th on reports that she had called 911 repeatedly as she tried to retrieve her property from an apartment complex. The situation quickly degenerated with Harris becoming "very aggressive" towards dispatchers.
Harris was arrested and charged with misusing the 911 system as well as hate crimes after hurling several racist anti-white invectives at the responding officer.
According to The Shreveport Times, dispatchers sent police to an apartment complex at approximately 6:30 a.m. on August 4th near downtown after several calls to 911 from Harris, in which she was “very aggressive towards them during the calls.” She reportedly told dispatchers that "she would keep calling" until an officer arrived on the scene.
As reported by BRProud, the same officer who had brought Harris to the apartment complex on a previous occasion responded. The suspect was attempting to retrieve her personal belongings, despite the officer having previously advised her “to call the constable’s office to set a time to recover her belongings if she was not able to do so today.”
When the officer arrived and informed Harris that no one would help her break into the complex to retrieve her property, she reportedly became incensed and was arrested for misuse of the 911 system, an offense she was previously arrested for in 2016 per WBRZ.
En route to the first district for booking Harris allegedly began to make "multiple comments about the officer being white and that was the reason for her arrest,” the officer's affidavit read.
These comments included calling the officer a "racist a** mother******,” and a “union ni**a boy," BRProud reported.
She further dared the officer to "put hands on her," and upon arrival at the first district, refused to be shackled and led into holding. Harris, despite telling the officer she would cooperate, even refused to exit the vehicle at first.
She is being charged with hate crimes, illegal use of 911 emergency communication system, resisting a police officer with force or violence, public intimidation and retaliation, false communication with the intent to cause an emergency response, and misrepresentation during booking according to the outlet.
Under Louisiana Revised Statute14 §107.2, a "Hate crime" is defined as "any person to select the victim of the following offenses against person and property because of actual or perceived race, age, gender, religion, color, creed, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, or ancestry of that person... or membership or service in, or employment with, an organization, or because of actual or perceived employment as a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or emergency medical services personnel.”
The hate crime charge appears to originate from Harris' selection of the white officer as a victim based on the color of his skin, race, national origin, or ancestry and employment as a law enforcement officer.
