RALEIGH, NC - A man has been arrested for allegedly impersonating a police officer and threatening to arrest a woman if she did not engage in sexual acts with him.
According to WRAL, a man identified as 39-year-old Michael Sanchez Jones is now in custody after authorities said he impersonated a police officer to sexually assault a woman a week earlier. Jones was arrested on Wednesday, February 12th and has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree force sex offense, and impersonating law enforcement.
Authorities with the Raleigh Police Department (RPD) said that Jones is an employee at Capitol Special Patrol, which is a private security service in Raleigh. Several people in the area said that it is scary to hear about someone taking advantage of people by pretending to be an officer. Shenkqui Allen, a mother living in Raleigh, said, "How do you know if it's a real cop that comes to your door, that's gonna come to your aid when you're stranded on the street? It's kind of hard to tell because you have people out here impersonating police officers."
CBS17 reported that Jones made his first court appearance in Wake County Court on Thursday, February 13th and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 6th.
In January, Raleigh police arrested Carl Thomas Bennet and charged him with impersonating an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent and threatening to deport a woman if she did not engage in sexual acts with him. Bennet, 37, was also charged with multiple sex crimes for threatening the woman.
Police said they located the victim at the Motel 6. Arrest warrants said that Bennet "threatened to deport the victim is she did not have sex with him" and that he "displayed a business card with a badge on it." One woman said that these situations emphasize the importance of everyone, but especially women knowing their rights, and knowing what real officers would and would not ask for.
Alexis Pfiefer said, "You don't know what to believe. I would just say watch what you do, watch how you are. I would not step out of the vehicle without asking them their badge number, anything." In a separate incident, a 58-year-old Lake Worth Beach, Florida, man was arrested for impersonating a police officer at an elementary school.
According to Hoodline, the suspect has been identified as Wilner Auguste. He was arrested after a school officer stopped him for driving on the sidewalk and grass to enter the parking lot of Barton Elementary School on Monday, February 10th. The officer discovered police-like lights on his car, handcuffs, and weapons including AR-15 magazines, a handgun, and bulletproof equipment.
When questioned, Auguste initially claimed to be a police officer, but later said that he was "simply a security officer." He provided a private investigator license number and a security G-license number to support his claim. He was arrested for falsely impersonating a law enforcement officer and possessing a badge resembling the Florida state seal.
During an inventory of his vehicle, a Sig Saur handgun with full magazines and an empty chamber was found. Auguste was booked with a bond of $5000 for impersonation and an additional $1000 for wearing an official sheriff's badge or insignia.
