In the latest episode of “Sheepdog and Shepherd,” Doug McCary shares how his life has been rather different from most. Starting as a Marine pilot and flying one of the armed services’ most perilous aircraft, he became an FBI agent and served on a SWAT unit. Now, however, he is focused on belief, instruction, and helping people reconcile power with religious belief.
A standard practice flight altered everything for McCary. Whilst piloting a Harrier, a bird impacted his cockpit’s windscreen, wounding him and harming the aircraft. He only recalls of the subsequent events; however, the incident proved influential. It was a moment of crisis, which prompted him to reassess his faith and the course his life was taking.
Following months of recovery, McCary returned to flying, yet his values had changed. He ultimately resigned from the Marines and entered the FBI, undertaking narcotics probes in Jacksonville, and afterwards was on a SWAT team. He was satisfied with the work and the feeling of usefulness it gave, but he sensed a need for something more substantial.
His vocation was made more apparent during a missionary journey to Russia. McCary addressed individuals who had little to no knowledge of Christianity. Operating in foreign countries had genuine dangers. During one journey, McCary was detained and questioned by officials who didn’t trust Western missionaries.
The incident was stressful, but he remained calm and relied on prayer rather than aggression. Eventually, he was let go and returned to his duties, but the escalating difficulties faced by local religious leaders made it difficult for him to return.
Soon after, McCary resigned from the FBI to devote himself to spiritual work. He founded His Light International Ministries and later founded SWAT Radio – a men’s scriptural study based on the concept of “Spiritual Warriors Developing Truth.” He also returned to weapons training, forming the Centurion Training Group to instruct police and civilians in practicing protective measures responsibly and from a religious perspective.
continues to guide men, teach police, and run Bible studies. He frequently gives his time to assist police in improving both their abilities and their spiritual lives. His point is clear: remain rooted in the Bible, live honestly, and never forget the responsibility to help others.
McCary’s story reveals a changed life that serves with devotion, helps people, and keeps life connected to a purpose beyond himself.
