RIO RICO, AZ – A delivery driver out of the Tucson area who was detained by Pima County Sheriff’s deputies earlier in February in connection to the ongoing investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s alleged abduction has since been released by authorities, according to reports.
As previously reported in Law Enforcement Today, the mother of ABC “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie was last seen on the evening of January 31st after the 84-year-old woman was dropped off back at her home after having spent time at her daughter Annie’s house earlier in the evening.
Upon being reported missing the following day, local authorities discovered a blood splatter outside Nancy’s home which later proved to be the missing woman’s DNA, leading investigators to believe she was forcibly abducted from her Catalina Foothills home. A doorbell camera located at Nancy’s home reportedly detected a motion at approximately 2:15 a.m. on February 1st, with said captured footage proving unable to obtain initially.
However, FBI investigators were reportedly able to obtain the footage initially thought lost, releasing a series of images publicly of a masked suspect outside Nancy’s home prior to her disappearance.
Shortly after the FBI released photos of the currently unknown masked suspect, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department reportedly detained a man in Rio Rico later identified as Carlos Palazuelos on the evening of February 10th. According to Palazuelos, who has since been released from custody, deputies pulled him over and held him for questioning, asking about his whereabouts around the time of Nancy’s disappearance.
While Palazuelos isn’t exactly certain as to why authorities latched onto him in the matter, he suspects his work as a delivery driver may’ve led him to, at some point in the past, delivering a package to Nancy’s residence. Additionally, Palazuelos claims investigators showed one of the images of the masked suspect to his in-laws during the detention, asserting that the masked man’s eyes appeared to look like Palazuelos’.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department, alongside the FBI, reportedly conducted a search of Palazuelos’ home during the ordeal via a search warrant signed by a judge. It’s currently unclear as to what evidence was presented to justify the execution of the aforementioned search warrant, but authorities had cleared the scene and removed all police tape by the morning of February 11th.
The official X account of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement on February 11th following their previously announced update about a subject being detained, saying that the department has “no press briefings or interviews scheduled at this time,” and will only host a press conference in the event “a significant development” occurs.
