GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A 44-year-old orthodontist will likely be spending the rest of his life behind bars after being handed down a sixty year sentence in federal court this past February regarding his years’ long sexual exploitation of minors online.
On February 23rd, 44-year-old Thomas Shannon learned his fate in court during his sentencing at the U.S. District Court Western District of Michigan following a conviction of numerous charges of sexual exploitation of a minor.
According to a press release from the Justice Department, Shannon had been in contact with at least eighteen minors aged between 12 and 17 years old via communication apps like Snapchat between 2019 and 2024, with one of the victims being exploited by Shannon while he was on bond for state charges of possession of child pornography.
Some of the communication with one of the minor victims was reportedly carried out while Shannon was aboard his yacht in Ottawa County, which said vessel was forfeited to authorities due to his prosecution.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) worked alongside the Kent County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Fuquay-Varina and Prince George’s County Police Departments during the investigation which ultimately led to Shannon’s conviction.
U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Timothy VerHey issued a statement in light of the conviction, noting his lack of surprise at the 60 year sentence imposed on Shannon given the child predator’s “selfish and senseless exploitation” of his victims.
“Shannon’s selfish and senseless exploitation of these children has exposed them to a lifetime of emotional damage,” VerHey stated, adding, “I sincerely hope they can overcome it. But preying on our children must stop, and we will seek long sentences against people like Shannon until it does stop.”
HSI Detroit acting Special Agent in Charge Jared Murphey also issued a statement regarding Shannon’s sentence, saying, “This offender preyed on vulnerable children, but through extensive collaboration between HSI and our law enforcement partners, we were able to identify victims and ensure the defendant was held accountable. We hope this sentence delivers some measure of justice to his victims. We relentlessly investigate these crimes and tirelessly pursue those who exploit children.”
