ST. LOUIS, MO – A 29-year-old woman from Missouri was charged with two counts of abuse/neglect of a child earlier in June after authorities claim her two daughters, ages 3 and 20 months, were found emaciated in her home with the younger of the two succumbing to malnourishment as a result.
On June 14th, St. Louis Metropolitan Police were dispatched to a residence located off of the 4300 block of St. Ferdinand Avenue in response to a 911 call reportedly made by 29-year-old Sausha Myers regarding her 20-month-old daughter having become unresponsive.
Upon arriving at the home, officers reportedly found the 20-month-old lying on the living room floor while the 3-year-old was in another room, both appearing extremely malnourished with the younger bearing what appeared to be bed sores along her back and head. Both children were rushed to an area hospital for treatment, with the 20-month-old being pronounced deceased shortly after her arrival.
Authorities claim that at the time of the infant’s death, she only weighed 10 pounds, roughly 14 pounds underweight, whereas the 3-year-old weighed 17 pounds, approximately 13 pounds underweight. Additionally, the surviving toddler had also reportedly developed lanugo, a form of body hair that develops to keep the body warm in response to insufficient body fat.
When police questioned Myers at the hospital, she reportedly revealed to authorities that she hadn’t taken either child to a pediatrician in over a year but proclaimed neither of the two children had any known medical conditions. While questioning Myers about the children’s diet, detectives determined the 20-month-old was likely only consuming approximately 250 calories or less per day.
Myers was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of abuse/neglect of a child, with records showing she’s being held without bond at the St. Louis City Justice Center. Her next scheduled court appearance is slated for June 25th.
