NEW ORLEANS, LA – The Trump administration reportedly announced their latest targeted immigration enforcement operation slated to occur, with the next stop being none other than The Crescent City, New Orleans.
On December 3rd, Homeland Security announced the launch of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) latest targeted endeavor as part of the agency’s broader immigration enforcement plan across the country with “Operation Catahoula Crunch.”
As previously reported in Law Enforcement Today, ICE has been engaged in numerous targeted operations across notable cities within the United States, netting both favorable results operationally while also attracting ire and criticism from ideological opponents of the current administration.
With the latest immigration enforcement operation targeting New Orleans, Homeland Security’s motivations for doing so are in line with prior targeted operations insofar as the agency is pointing to “sanctuary policies” that see immigration detainers ignored by state and local officials within Louisiana.
Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement in tandem with the agency’s announcement of Operation Catahoula Crunch, saying, “Sanctuary policies endanger American communities by releasing illegal criminal aliens and forcing DHS law enforcement to risk their lives to remove criminal illegal aliens that should have never been put back on the streets.”
According to McLaughlin, New Orleans officials are complicit in what she called an “asinine” practice of routinely setting free criminal illegal aliens back into the community despite being advised by ICE that they’re subject to removal proceedings.
“It is asinine that these monsters were released back onto New Orleans streets to commit more crimes and create more victims. Catahoula Crunch targets include violent criminals who were released after arrest for home invasion, armed robbery, grand theft auto, and rape. Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, we are restoring law and order for the American people,” the Homeland Security Assistant Secretary concluded in her statement.
While Homeland Security has not detailed any specifics on the number of federal agents to be deployed to the New Orleans area for the launched operation, reports suggest as many as 250 federal agents could be sent across Louisiana and Mississippi as part of a coinciding Trump administration effort dubbed “Swamp Sweep.”
As seen in past immigration enforcement operations targeting Democrat strongholds, the presence of the National Guard is anticipated with the Louisiana effort. However, the difference with Louisiana as compared to operations in California and Illinois, is that the governor, Jeff Landry, happens to be Republican and has already approved up to 1,000 National Guard members to be deployed in line with immigration enforcement efforts.
