NEW YORK, NY - Migrants as young as 11 years old and living in city shelters are reportedly behind a string of robberies afflicting adjoining neighborhoods in New York City and forcing the NYPD to respond with a show of force in Central Park.
As reported by Fox News, the southern portion of Central Park near Columbus Circle, The Plaza Hotel, and the Grand Army Plaza has seen a massive increase in crime with robberies in particular jumping up 200%, felony assaults by 43%, and other major crimes increasing 46% citing data from the NYPD.
NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell told gathered reporters at a press conference in front of the park, "At this point in time, we’re ready to call it, this is a migrant robbery pattern. We think they’re responsible for most of them if not all of them."
Chell described the recent assaults and robberies as comprising a pattern of criminality with small groups of eight to 12 and even pairs working in concert. "There is roughly 10 robberies that fit this pattern. Most of these occurred inside or near the park. We think they are responsible for most, if not all, of them."
The NYPD is now deploying an additional forty officers to patrol the park during evening hours from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. the outlet reported. Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Tarik Sheppard added that drones will also be deployed to assist the officers beginning at the end of August.
Sheppard told reporters, "We’re not going to tolerate crimes at one of the most iconic locations in the world… if you’re a bad guy you should be looking over our shoulder that you know that we’re not playing games. We are going to get these crimes down and keep Central Park safe."
Chell revealed that at least one 11-year-old illegal immigrant from Venezuela was arrested Tuesday and police have him on surveillance footage using stolen credit cards from robberies in the park. The New York Post reported, that the boy and another aged 17 were nabbed after allegedly attacking a mass-transit rider on the Manhattan-bound 7 train in Queens.
A Brooklyn detective who spoke to the Post anonymously told reporters, "The city has to protect these kids. The mayor cannot say the city has done an amazing job handling the migrant situation when you see cases like this. This shows the city is failing.”
