GIBSON COUNTY, IN – A 53-year-old man from Indiana learned his fate in court earlier in February after being convicted of the 2024 murders of his ex-wife and adult son, where he used a house fire in an attempt to cover up the double homicide.
On February 13th, Michael Kegg Jr. was handed down a 126-year-sentence for the murders of his 51-year-old ex-wife, Malisa Kegg, and his 34-year-old son, Michael Kegg III. Kegg Jr. had reportedly shot the duo with a shotgun on New Year’s Eve 2024, later dousing the bodies and home in an accelerant and setting fire to the residence in a bid to cover up the double homicide.
According to prosecutors, Kegg Jr. had been in the midst of the fallout of a contentious divorce with Malisa when the murders occurred, with the two having attended a divorce hearing a mere two weeks before the fatal incident. At the time of the murders, Kegg Jr. had already remarried to a woman named Amanda Kegg, who is also facing charges in connection with the two murders as prosecutors allege she was an accomplice to the ordeal.
A day prior to the murders, Kegg Jr. had also reportedly contacted city officials in Francisco, demanding that they cease utility services to Malisa’s address as he was apparently on the hook for the bills and expressed frustration over having to pay for them.
On the night of the fatal incident, prosecutors say Amanda drove Kegg Jr. to Malisa’s residence while leaving his cellphone at home seemingly as a means to help solidify a digital alibi. A physical altercation likely ensued between Kegg Jr. and his adult son before the fatal shots were fired, as an autopsy revealed Kegg III had suffered multiple lacerations to the head prior to being shot in the chest.
A 64-year-sentence was given to Kegg Jr. for the murder of his wife while a 62-year-sentence was rendered for the murder of his son, with the sentences to run consecutively. Amanda’s case is still ongoing, and she has since entered a plea of not guilty to charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
