Ohio Police Issue Warning After Suspects Pose as Tree Workers to Pull Off Home Burglary

COLUMBUS, OH - Detectives with the Columbus Division of Police Property Crimes Bureau are warning residents of a "distraction burglary" after a local homeowner was targeted by thieves posing as tree service workers.

According to authorities, a male suspect wearing a high-visibility safety vest knocked on the victim's door, claiming he was there to cut down trees in the backyard, ABC6 reported. While the suspect led the victim outside to discuss the work, a second individual entered the home undetected.

Once inside the home, the second suspect stole an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry before both individuals fled the scene. Distraction burglaries often involve suspects posing as utility workers, delivery drivers, or municipal employees to lure residents away from their entryways.

Columbus Police urge residents to remain cautious and remind the public that legitimate city workers or contractors will typically have official identification and marked vehicles.

Anyone with information that could help identify the suspects is asked to contact Detective Johnson at 614-645-2158. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
