CANBY, OR - A man in his thirties who has been accused of kidnapping a 10-year-old girl has now been charged with several other crimes, including attempted murder.
The alleged suspect, 35-year-old Vince Edgar Chavez, was arrested and arraigned on Thursday, October 29 on ten felony charges including attempted murder, assault, kidnapping, sexual abuse, burglary, and two counts of sodomy and unlawful use of a weapon, according to a press release from the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office.
The DA requested that Chavez be held without bail, a request the circuit judge granted. "The District Attorney’s Office is grateful for the swift action by our law enforcement partners in locating and arresting the defendant before he could inflict further harm,” said CCDAO Chief Deputy District Attorney Chris Owen in a statement.
The 10-year-old child was abducted from her home in Canby, Oregon, on the morning of Wednesday, October 28, the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) said in a press release.
The USMS Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force was dispatched to locate the little girl and the "prime suspect" in the incident. They were able to locate them in the 500 block of Pleasant Avenue, in Oregon City, which is about 10 miles away from Canby. The task force, with a local SWAT team, police, a Tactical Negotiations Team and FBI, worked together to plan a raid on the site.
They made entry as the alleged suspect "attempted to escape out the rear of the house." Chavez was arrested without further incident. The little girl was found "in the residence tied up in a closet," according to the USMS. The DA said in their press release that she was found "restrained by duct tape and stuffed in a duffle bag."
She was escorted safely into a law enforcement vehicle and "transported to a local medical facility for treatment of her injuries and further evaluation."
It took approximately 13 hours for authorities to locate the alleged suspect and the 10-year-old girl. The DA said that the child's older sister was also "hit in the head numerous times with a hammer," during the alleged abduction. Chavez is scheduled to be arraigned on an indictment on Thursday, November 5.
"This case demonstrates the power of collaboration and our unwavering commitment to protecting our communities and holding violent offenders accountable,” said District of Oregon Chief Deputy United States Marshal Eddie Sanchez in a statement.
