TREDYFFRIN TOWNSHIP, PA - A 44-year-old man from a small township in Chester County is facing a first-degree murder charge after authorities say he fatally shot a woman earlier in March in what’s being described as a random act of violence. The suspect in the case reportedly had an interaction with law enforcement prior to the shooting, where he declined medical assistance for a suspected mental health crisis.
On March 7, Tredyffrin Township Police officers encountered 44-year-old Steve Jahn during a welfare check at approximately 8:30 p.m. while he was outside of a local bank, with responding officers noting he displayed “frantic behavior” and possessed a firearm. Authorities say Jahn told officers he believed he was being followed, with officers suggesting he check himself in at a local hospital.
Jahn reportedly agreed with officers initially, even asking the officers to provide an escort while he drove himself to the hospital. However, upon Jahn’s arrival at an area hospital, he reportedly claimed the vehicles present in the parking lot were the ones following him earlier. After Jahn asserted that he no longer wanted to be checked out at the hospital, responding officers were left with no other choice but to allow him to leave.
Approximately two hours following Jahn’s encounter with local authorities, police were alerted to a shooting “in the area of Contention Lane at Old State Road,” according to a press release from the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, with the victim later being identified as Megan Nieberle.
Responding officers found Nieberle slumped over in her vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound to the head, and the victim was declared deceased after being rushed to an area hospital. Upon speaking with witnesses, police learned that the suspect was a male who was screaming incoherently before firing off a number of rounds near the 800 block of Contention Lane.
Hours after the shooting, police arrived at a residence belonging to a relative of Jahn’s, with the homeowner telling authorities that Jahn had come to their home carrying a gun and the dashcam from his vehicle. Jahn was taken into custody at said residence, with investigators later reviewing the retrieved dashcam, which allegedly showed Jahn’s muttering “I ain't playing no more. I ain't playing no more, motherf*ckers,” in the moments leading up to his initial welfare check on March 7.
In a series of alleged ramblings while in police custody, authorities say Jahn proclaimed, “I pulled the trigger at the car, I definitely did that, but I didn't do anything else, what the f*ck? Got me to admit that, can we move on to the next phase?”
An acquaintance of the suspect spoke with a local NBC affiliate regarding the incident, revealing that Jahn had stopped taking his prescribed medications in tandem with dealing with substance abuse issues.
Jahn is being held at the Chester County Jail without bail, with his next scheduled court appearance slated for March 23.
