NEW YORK CITY, NY - A 25-year-old man was arrested earlier in February after authorities say the suspect attacked two women at a subway stop in the Brooklyn borough, allegedly shoving one victim onto the tracks and physically striking another. A third victim was also allegedly assaulted by the suspect after he fled the scene.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on February 14 around 8:45 a.m. at the R line at 53rd Street and 4th Avenue in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park. The suspect, identified as Curtis Signal, allegedly shoved a 51-year-old woman onto the subway tracks and then punched another 43-year-old woman in the face before fleeing the area.
A third victim was reportedly assaulted after Signal fled the scene, with reports indicating he struck a 17-year-old girl in the face near 52nd Street and Fourth Avenue.
Police say the attacks appeared to be unprovoked. Signal was later apprehended after being tracked down a few blocks away from the original incident at a men’s shelter located along 2nd Avenue.
The daughter of the 43-year-old victim, later identified as Benita Frias, says her mother suffered severe bruising and swelling to her face and leg, along with a broken knee due to the attack. Frias’ daughter, Issamar, told CBS News that her mother didn’t say a word to the suspect before the attack, nor did the 51-year-old victim.
In light of the unprovoked attack on her mother, Issamar, who herself is a mother to three, is afraid to ride the subway, which serves as her sole means of transportation to work. Issamar also said she fears for her mother, saying, “I just feel very sad for my mom because my mom goes out every day for work.”
A report from the New York Post notes that Signal has an extensive criminal history, describing the suspect as “a repeat offender in transit” while noting he’s already on probation for past assaults through June of 2027.
Signal has since been charged with assault, while the three victims were treated at an area hospital and are expected to fully recover without serious complications.
