Florida police arrest a man who has 18 prior felony convictions on drug and gun charges

DESOTO COUNTY, FL - Authorities arrested a convicted felon on drug and gun-related charges after detectives conducted a search warrant on Wednesday, October 16th. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Wilford Lee Smith Jr., is reported to be an 18-time convicted felon who had two active warrants related to illegal narcotics sales.

According to NBC2, DeSoto County deputies saw Smith driving near his home. Deputies approached Smith and immediately noticed marijuana in plain sight in his home and his car. After that, a search warrant was executed. The search revealed over 64 grams of marijuana, 296 baggies labeled for distribution, and multiple firearms. One firearm was reportedly stolen from Highlands County.

As a convicted felon, it is against the law for Smith to possess a firearm or ammunition. Smith was arrested and booked into the DeSoto County Jail. He is facing the following charges: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; possession of ammunition by a convicted felon; sale or delivery of marijuana; manufacture of drug paraphernalia; and possession of marijuana over 20 grams.

In Waterbury, Connecticut, police found a vehicle in the road with a door ajar and the driver asleep, leading to the arrest of a convicted felon. According to WFSB, Waterbury police identified the man as 28-year-old Christian Martinez. According to police, on Saturday, October 19th, just before 4:00 a.m., an officer on patrol spotted the vehicle in the middle of Cherry Street. The driver side door was ajar and the driver appeared to be asleep.

The officer stopped to check on the wellbeing of the driver. While doing that, the officer saw a loaded gun with an illegal high capacity magazine. Martinez was taken to a nearby hospital for a medical evaluation. Police said that he did not have a valid Connecticut pistol permit, and as a convicted felon, he is legally prohibited from possessing any firearms or ammunition.

Martinez has been charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a pistol/revolver, illegal sale or transfer of a firearm, and illegal possession of a large-capacity magazine. He was held on a $750,000 bond and was scheduled to see a judge on Monday, October 21st. Waterbury saw another incident involved a convicted felon just a few days prior to the one mentioned above.

According to WFSB, on Wednesday, October 16th, a convicted felon was arrested after a shots fired incident. Police said that around 2:20 a.m., units responded to the area of 1211 Baldwin Street on reports of shots fired. Upon arriving on scene, police found evidence that gunfire did take place. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Devon Abney, was located near the area. Before being taken into custody, he tried to flee the scene.

A investigation revealed that he was involved in an argument outside the residence, which led him to firing his weapon. One of the rounds struck an occupied bedroom window at the residence. However, no injuries were reported. As a convicted felon, Abney is prohibited from owning a firearm or ammunition. His prior convictions include firearm and narcotics-related offenses.

He has been charged with illegal discharge of a firearm, two counts of risk to an injury to a child, second degree criminal mischief, interfering with an officer, second degree breach of peace, criminal possession of a pistol/revolver, and first degree reckless endangerment. He is currently being held on a $750,000 bond.
