MOUNT OLIVET, KY - Authorities have arrested a woman after someone found a dismembered body in the backyard of a residence where upon a search of the property by the police, human remains were found in a pot in the home's oven that were still warm.
According to the Associated Press (AP), a man who was hired to work on the property at Mount Olivet called authorities on Wednesday, October 9th, after finding a body in the backyard. The arrest report states that responding officers saw the dismembered corpse in the grass, a bloody mattress nearby, and blood stains on the back porch and the back-door's threshold.
After seeing that, police obtained a search warrant for the home and called in a special response team. Prior to entering the house, police learned that a woman, 32-year-old Torilena May Fields, was inside and refused to come out. Police deployed tear gas inside the house and conversed with the woman using a robot. Fields exited without further incident later that evening. Police said that the woman had blood on her face, hands, and clothing.
While searching the home, police found a steel pot in the oven containing human remains, with the pot still being "warm to the touch." The man who called the police said that he saw Fields and her mother, Trudy Fields, who owns the home, when he visited on Tuesday evening, October 8th. He said that no one else was at the house when he was there. The arrest report says that the man told police that before he left for home that night, the daughter was "casting spells on them and being confrontational." The report also notes that she may have been using drugs.
The man said that when he found the body, he believed it to be Trudy because he found a "pile of her hair." Police wrote in the arrest report that the victim was, in fact, Trudy Fields, the girl's mother. According to WHAS11, when police arrived, they noted that the victim's body had its arms, legs, and head removed. The blood-soaked mattress reportedly had multiple severed body parts and organs on it.
LOCAL12 reported that the gruesome news has shaken the small town. Mount Olivet resident Jackie McLaughlin said, "Around here, you hear of certain people, domestic violence cases, and stuff like that, but you've never heard of something so awful. When I first heard about it, I was extremely shocked. Everyone was shocked. No one could believe that something like that could happen this close."
Trudy Fields' home is up a long private driveway, with only a house across the street. It's a pretty remote area. On Thursday evening, October 10th, police and family were at the property. McLaughlin said, "I think that's why everyone was really shocked about it because you don't hear about that in small towns like this. It's usually big cities." She added, "I've experienced stuff like this myself, not as bad as this, but like domestic violence and from the outside, you don't see it because everyone keeps on a happy face. You just never know what's going on."
In a news release, Kentucky State Police (KSP) said that Fields has been charged with abusing a corpse, evidence tampering, and obstructing government operations. Police said that the woman could possibly face further charges. She is currently being held at the Bourbon County Detention Center.
