Police-defunded Seattle: Two people shot while at a memorial at Capitol Hill for a shooting victim the day before

SEATTLE, WA - Authorities said that police are investigating a double shooting incident that happened in the middle of the night at a memorial site for a woman who was fatally shot early in the morning just hours before in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.

According to KING5, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) said that 911 received reports of shots fired in the 1400 block of 11th Avenue shortly before 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, October 20th. Upon arriving on scene, officers found a 25-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the leg. She was transported a nearby hospital in serious but stable condition. A short time later, a 29-year-old man walked into Harborview Medical Center with a gunshot wound. Police said that he was shot at the same location as the woman.

Witnesses told police that multiple suspects fired shots and fled the scene in vehicles. A press release from SPD said that officers searched the area with the help of King County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit, but no suspects were located. The memorial was at the location where a 25-year-old woman was shot and killed just 24-hours before, at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 19th.

SPD's Gun Violence Reduction Unit is working to determine the circumstances that led up to both shootings. As of this writing, no suspects have been identified and no one has been arrested. The victims have also not been identified.

In a separate incident, authorities with the King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) are investigating a shooting that left at least one person dead and others injured in an incident that took place in the early morning hours of Monday, October 21st, in the Fall City area. KCSO Public Information Officer Mike Mellis said that homicide detectives are investigating the shooting as a domestic violence incident. He said, "This is a significant event for the neighborhood. And I'd call it a significant event for the region."

Police said that multiple callers reported a disturbance at a residence located in the 7700 block of Lake Alice Road Southeast near the Lake Alice public boat launch; they reported gunfire being heard. Before deputies arrived on scene, they had learned that a neighbor with a medical background gave aid to one of the residents. That resident was taken to Harborview Medical Center in good condition.

Once on scene, deputies secured the area and entered the home. Mellis said, "What they found was a mix of injured and deceased persons." He did not clarify how many people or their relationship to one another.

The major crimes unit of the KCSO will lead the investigation, but they have asked for help from the Washington State Police (WSP) to bring its crime scene response unit. WSP will take over the forensics at the scene. Mellis said, "It was a traumatic scene. That discovery prompted the investigation." He said that KCSO asking for help from the WSP implies that the situation is serious and will require expertise and time. He added, "It's going to be a very significant, long investigation at this house."

As of this writing, KCSO has not made any arrests or taken anyone into custody. Multiple agencies and departments were on scene Monday morning. Mellis said that the King County Medical Examiner's Office will be the only authority to release the name and biographical details of victims. When talking about the incident happening, Mellis said that the neighborhood is quiet and does not see much drama or police activity.

He said, "It's a pretty nice area. Low crime rate in general. This is a place where people come to raise their families. Everybody in this community is going to have some effect to this tragedy." Mellis said that KCSO does not believe there is a danger to others because it was a domestic violence event.
