SOUTHPORT, IN - Lieutenant Tony Wilson of the Southport Police Department suffered from a near-fatal exposure to fentanyl during a traffic stop and is reportedly recovering after accidentally inhaling trace amounts of the drug in powder form.

As reported by Fox 59, the SPD said that at approximately 7:00 p.m., Lt. Wilson initiated a traffic stop near a Speedway gas station on US Rt. 31. The driver reportedly had a criminal record and was driving without a license. While searching the suspect's vehicle, Lt. Wilson encountered a dollar bill coated in what he believed was fentanyl.

The officer told reporters that he accidentally inhaled the white powder on the bill and rapidly called for help before he passed out trying to self-administer NARCAN.

SPD Chief Thomas Vaughn told the outlet, “This officer was fighting for his life. He inhaled it, so trying to get himself help and also Narcan. There’s a lot going on in that situation.” The Department's leadership credited Lt. Wilson's quick thinking and the rapid response of the Fire Department with saving his life.

Rafael Sánchez reported that the department is reviewing whether its officers have sufficient equipment to respond to narcotics calls.

According to a press release from Southport PD Public Information Officer Sgt. Douglas Hunter, Lt. Wilson "was exposed to fentanyl, leading to an overdose. Demonstrating the incredible presence of the mind, Lt. Wilson was able to call for medical assistance before losing consciousness."

He added, "Thanks to the quick response of Indianapolis Fire Department Engine 26 and the exceptional medical care provided by Community South Hospital, Lt. Wilson's life was saved."

"We sincerely thank the Indianapolis Fire Department and Community South Hospital for their heroic efforts."

Chief Vaughn added, “He looks at different things to do and works through those scenarios every day to be better.” He added, "If he wasn’t that good, we’d be having another police funeral today.”

The department did not confirm if the driver is still in custody or if they are facing drug charges per WISH-TV. Lt. Wilson is expected to make full recovery according to the SPD.
