PORTLAND, OR- The legacy of so-called “defund the police” groups took another hit when a man who was bailed out by an anti-police, pro-criminal group was sentenced to life in prison (a misnomer since he will be eligible for parole after 25 years) in connection with the 2022 murder of his girlfriend and the mother of his children, Racheal Abraham.
According to the Post Millennial, Mohamed Adan, 36, had been put behind bars in connection with an assault he committed upon Abraham back in 2022. The “Portland Freedom Fund” posted his bail, allowing him to get out of jail and free to reoffend.
‘The Portland Freedom Fund, thinking it knew better than law enforcement professionals, decided to bail him out,” Melissa Marrero, senior prosecutor on the case, said at Adan’s sentencing hearing last week, according to the Oregonian. “It cost her her life.”
In the earlier assault, Abraham pleaded with the judge not to release Adan after he had strangled her and punched her in the head twice in May, 2022. Adan was high on meth when he committed the crime.
According to the Multnomah County Office of the District Attorney, Adan returned to the apartment on June 23, 2022, in violation of a restraining order. He was mistakenly allowed into the apartment by one of the children. Adan refused to leave and broke Abraham’s phone so she couldn’t call for help. Abraham told police he strangled her multiple times and said things like, “I’m going to put you to sleep” and “I should kill you.” He also punched her in the face. She managed to escape when Adan went upstairs to check on the children. Responding officers said Abraham had a black eye and her left cheek was swollen, and placed Adan under arrest.
At his arraignment, Abraham told the court, “Judge, please hold him. I’m concerned for my safety and my kids. Statistics show that strangulation cases lead to homicide, and I don’t want to be a victim of this. When he was strangling me he was speaking in the third person asking if he should kill me. I’m concerned for my safety and the safety of my kids.”
Those words had zero impact on the judge, who granted Adan’s release, but issued a “no-contact” order, however did not offer any further protection. The judge, Benjamin Bushong, released Adan under the condition that he wear an ankle monitor. Adan again failed to abide by the conditions of his release and returned to the address on July 27, 2022. A warrant for his arrest was requested.
Adan cut the monitor off and then returned to Abraham’s home and beat her with prayer beads on Aug. 11, 2022. He was arrested again, however, the do-gooders at the Portland Freedom Fund paid the 10% of the bail he needed to be released, giving $2,000 of the $20,000 bail.
A judge once again put him on an ankle monitor, which Adan again disabled. He returned to Abraham's apartment after being freed by the Portland Freedom Fund and proceeded to stab and strangle her to death while their children were in the home, prosecutors said.
The medical examiner concluded she died by strangulation, which meant that she had already suffered the knife wounds, which were to her face and other parts of her body.
Adan pleaded guilty to killing Abraham.
After the sentencing, Marrero added:
“This case is an absolute tragedy that never should have happened. The warning signs were there, and Racheal Abraham did everything in her power to protect herself. Mohamed Adan should have never been out of custody. Those who believed they knew better than the professionals tasked with ensuring safety, including Racheal herself, were wrong. And it cost her life. Racheal deserved better. Her children deserved better. She should be here with us today.
“It’s important to those closest to Racheal that she is remembered for more than her brutal killing. Racheal Abraham was a deeply selfless and loving person. She was a devoted mother, a daughter, a sister, and a friend. She was loved and is deeply missed.”
The Portland Freedom Fund is thankfully out of business. Unfortunately, that's too late for Racheal Abraham and her children.
