PROVIDENCE, RI – The mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, signed an executive order earlier in September serving as a means to reiterate standing policy imposed on local police which effectively forbids officers from collaborating with federal immigration authorities in any meaningful capacity pertaining to immigration operations.
Earlier this week, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley signed an executive order titled “A Safe Providence for All,” which the mayor explained serves as a codifying vehicle for the city’s already standing prohibition on local law enforcement officers collaborating with federal immigration authorities.
“Providence Police Department will not and should not serve as immigration officers,” Mayor Smiley stated during a press conference related to the signed executive order.
“Our officers are focused on public safety, not civil immigration enforcement. They will never ask about an individual's immigration status.”
Mayor Smiley was adamant during the press conference that local law enforcement will not be assisting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), or any other federal agency engaged in immigration enforcement endeavors, saying, “While it's true that federal agencies may operate in our city, we will not and do not proactively collaborate with ICE or other federal immigration enforcement.”
According to the language outlined in the executive order, Mayor Smiley is attempting to impose guidelines and restrictions regarding how federal law enforcement can operate while conducting operations within Providence, an authority that the mayor seemingly doesn’t have despite the attempt to codify such.
Additionally, Mayor Smiley’s order makes a feeble attempt to compel federal immigration authorities to out their last names publicly at a time when federal agents and their families are facing increasing threats from radical activists.
“Federal agents are urged to at all times when interacting with the people in Providence to comply with procedures similar to the Providence Police Department,” the order reads, further adding, “and to clearly display the name of the federal agency, the last name and badge number of the federal law enforcement officer or the armed forces member’s last name and rank.”
This past May, the current administration listed Providence as one of the many “sanctuary jurisdictions” within the United States, a designation that Mayor Smiley seems unphased by as evidenced by his comments during the September press conference pertaining to his executive order where he noted, “I'm less concerned about losing one federal grant here and there than I am about members of our community being threatened and terrorized in their own neighborhoods.”
