Washington, D.C. - Members of Congress with law enforcement experience are hitting back at a progressive plan to require future cops recieve politically correct training.
A group of Republican elected officials are criticizing the Police Training and Independent Review Act, which requires police departments across the nation to implement content in their own training programs at the behest of the federal government.
Louisiana Rep. Clay Higgins, a former police officer and deputy sheriff, described the bill "another dangerously ridiculous bad idea from the woke left" in a statement provided to Fox News.
The bill, introduced to the House of Representatives by Democratic Rep. Steven Cohen earlier this month, would require police cadets to "receive sensitivity training on ethics and racial bias, cultural diversity, and police interaction with the people with disabilities, those in a mental health crisis, and new immigrants."
The law would make the requirement for those training under state and municipal police departments, who aren't ordinarily under the direct jurisdiction of the federal government.
Rep. John Rutherford of Florida slammed the idea that Congress should dictate the training programs of local police, in a statement provided to Fox.
"It is imperative that law enforcement officers are well-trained on agency policy and procedures and held to the highest standards that keep both officers and the public safe," the former law enforcement officer with 40 years of experience of police training.
"However, it is not the role of Congress, nor should it be, to tell local agencies what that training should look like. I oppose any effort to nationalize our law enforcement agencies, which is exactly what Rep. Cohen's bill does."
Rep. Pete Stauber of Minnesota likened the bill to Democratic support for defunding local law enforcement.
"Even after the failures of their extreme ‘Defund the Police’ movement, radical Democrats continue to demonize the brave men and women who protect and serve their communities. These anti-cop politicians don’t want real reform, they want to eradicate law enforcement altogether, and proposals like this continue to incite violence against them," the former Duluth Police Department said of the proposal in response to inquiry from Fox.
Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois introduced a variant of the bill in the Senate, pointing to the police shooting of a Springfield, Illinois woman Sonya Massey last month.
