The battle many men face is not fought on a public street or in a uniform. It happens behind closed doors and on late-night screens. It is a war that has quietly gripped boys as young as 10 or 12 and followed them into adulthood, marriage, and fatherhood. It is the fight against pornography.
On a recent episode of “Sheepdog and Shepherd,” hosts Kyle Reyes and Greg Farah shared why this conversation needed to happen in the light rather than in secrecy.
The episode featured clinical therapist Joe Alto, who works with Relay Health, an app that helps men struggling with pornography.
Alto explains how pornography use often begins innocently, but quickly becomes a coping mechanism for deeper wounds. "You go into it innocently... At some point though, in the life of every man, you start using pornography as the baby blanket... you created a connection between pain and porn, and you link them."
To help men break free, Alto and his team at Relay launched a national initiative that begins each November, calling men to take the first step, focusing on 30 days without pornography. He said most men today have not gone 30 days free from pornography since early adolescence.
The November Project provides daily texts or emails, teaching, encouragement, and a community of accountability partners. "We say that connection is the opposite of addiction."
Aside from the immediate and personal issues many face, Kyle also pointed to the harm tied to the industry behind porn. "It's also the nexus for so much crime, yes, from human trafficking to drugs to illegal weapons running. I mean, the porn industry is the hub of all of that."
Pornography is not an addiction that someone simply defeats for good. It takes the same lifelong vigilance required of an alcoholic. Kyle suggests "I don't think we'll ever conquer a porn addiction. I think it's alcoholism... you will stop... but guess what? You go through a real dark period in your life and three days of back in it, and that is going to come roaring back."
If you’re ready "get in the fight for your soul. It begins right here and right now." November is upon us, sign up for the anonymous challenge today.
